Anode en magnésium 1/2" 18x500 - NADO (avant 2018) 83.30.16
Protection against electrochemical corrosion in water heaters
The magnesium anode is a key operational component of enameled steel tanks and water heaters, providing effective protection against the corrosive action of domestic water. In combination with the enamel layer, it creates a comprehensive anti-corrosion protection system that protects the metal structure of the device from the harmful effects of the electrolyte.
Principle of operation and galvanic protection
In water installations using different materials such as steel, copper, or brass, corrosive micro-cells naturally form. The difference in electrical potential between metals causes accelerated electrochemical corrosion of the weakest element. The magnesium anode solves this problem through galvanic protection - it becomes a sacrificial anode that wears away instead of the protected metal surface.
The anode design with a diameter of 18 mm and a length of 500 mm with a 1/2" thread has been specially designed for HEWALEX tanks, NADO series (400/500) produced before 2018. The chain version is used in situations with limited installation space, where a standard rod anode cannot be correctly installed.
Service and replacement of the consumable element
The magnesium anode is a consumable element whose durability directly depends on the quality and hardness of the domestic water. The rate of wear is not precisely defined and can vary significantly between installations. For this reason, it is recommended to regularly check the condition of the anode at least once every two years.
Replacement should occur when wear exceeding half of the initial volume of the element is detected. Some sources recommend replacement when wear is greater than two-thirds of the initial volume, however, a safer approach is replacement at half wear. The maximum period between replacements should not exceed two years.
Regular and documented replacement of the anode may be a condition for maintaining the manufacturer's warranty for the heating device. Neglecting this procedure results in the loss of warranty protection and accelerated corrosion of the heater itself.
Importance for installation durability
A correctly operated magnesium anode significantly extends the lifespan of the entire heating system. Its action prevents the formation of corrosion foci on the tank walls, which could lead to perforation of the container and failure of the entire installation. Investing in the regular replacement of this relatively inexpensive component protects against costly repairs or the need to replace the entire water heater.
The size and installation method of the anode must be adapted to the type and capacity of the specific water heater, which guarantees optimal effectiveness of the galvanic protection of the entire system.
