Application and Construction of the Bypass Cross

This steel distribution component is designed to create complex nodes in heating and cooling installations, where it is necessary to connect pipelines of different diameters at a single point. Thanks to its specific bypass shape, it allows free flow of the medium through the main circuit with a diameter of 35 mm, while simultaneously enabling the branching of a smaller-diameter pipe of 15 mm without the need for additional reducing fittings or disrupting the flow continuity in the main line. This is an ideal solution for two-pipe systems, where installation precision and minimization of flow resistance are crucial for the efficiency of the entire installation.

The base material is carbon steel grade St 34.2 (1.0034), which ensures high mechanical strength and resistance to high operating pressures. To protect the component against corrosion, the surface is coated with a zinc layer using an electrolytic (galvanic) method. The thickness of this layer ranges from 8 to 15 µm, which, combined with chromic passivation, guarantees long-term protection even under challenging environmental conditions in indoor installations. Such construction makes the fitting suitable for operation at temperatures from -35°C to 135°C and at pressures up to 16 bar, covering most standard requirements for modern HVAC systems.

Mounting System and LBP Safety Function

Mounting of this cross fitting is based on pressing technology (Press), which eliminates the need for open flame, welding, or threaded connections. The key element ensuring tightness is an O-ring seal made of ethylene-propylene rubber (EPDM). This seal not only hermetically seals the connection but also performs the LBP function (Leak Before Press – controlled leakage before pressing).

Thanks to this function:

  • Safety during testing: If the installer forgets to press the connection before applying test pressure, the location will be leaky and easily detectable during water or air testing.
  • Quick diagnostics: This eliminates the risk of hidden leaks that could only be revealed after system startup and flooding of rooms.
  • Durability: These seals have been tested for a service life of at least 50 years, translating into years of trouble-free system operation.

It is worth noting that the use of steel with wall thickness adapted to DN 32 and DN 12 diameters allows for low flow resistance, which is particularly important in systems with circulation pumps of limited power.

Operating Conditions and System Compatibility

This component is characterized by high resistance to variable operating conditions thanks to the use of EPDM seals and a zinc coating with a thickness of 8-15 µm. In practice, this means safe operation within a wide temperature range – from freezing -35°C up to hot heating medium at temperatures up to 135°C (with short-term peaks up to 150°C). The maximum allowable operating pressure is 16 bar, making it suitable for most domestic and industrial closed-pressure installations.

This fitting is dedicated exclusively to KAN-therm Steel pipe systems, where all components must be dimensionally and materially compatible. The use of carbon steel St 34.2 guarantees the structural rigidity necessary for installing pipes with nominal diameters DN 32 and DN 12. It should be noted that due to the seal material (EPDM) and the steel body construction, the product should not be used in open installations or where chemical media aggressive to these materials are present – in such cases, technical consultation or selection of an alternative material solution is required. Precise manufacturing in accordance with standards ensures the durability of connections over many decades of operation without the risk of corrosion or leaks resulting from installation errors.
