How does the septic tank level sensor work?
The way septic tank level sensors work depends on their type. The model range is now so extensive that everyone has a chance to find a solution tailored to their septic tank. Modernly designed devices are basically maintenance-free - after installation and configuration, they do not require any involvement on the part of the user. You can choose between wired and wireless sensors.
A wired septic tank level sensor is a traditional solution, standardly equipped with a cable and power supply, a probe or float and a compact control unit (receiver) that is placed in the house. It is characterized by a simple structure, high reliability and efficiency, attractive price and ease of installation. The distance of the tank from the installation site of the signaling panel does not affect the efficiency of the device. As the level of contaminants in the tank increases, the float changes position. In the case of a probe, it is placed at a critical level with a safety buffer of several days. Two-electrode probes are used in tanks with conductive liquids, i.e. water, aqueous solutions, sewage, etc. When the probe comes into contact with such a liquid, an alarm is immediately triggered. For non-conductive liquids, floats can be used. The red diode on the control unit lights up to indicate that the alarm level has been reached in the septic tank. The message often amplifies the audio signal (can be turned off). For building users, this means one thing - it's time to call a slurry truck.
The wireless septic tank level sensor is based on radio communication between the float in the tank and the signaling device in the building. It offers all the advantages of the wired model, but does not require cable infrastructure. More advanced models send SMS messages informing selected recipients about the threat. They may be not only the owners of the building, but also the managers or directly the sewage treatment companies. When sewage reaches a dangerous level, an appropriate message will be automatically sent from the control unit. The operating pattern can be flexibly programmed. The signal should be located relatively close to the septic tank, which can be problematic in implementation.
How to properly measure the level in a septic tank?
The most effective method of measuring the filling level of a septic tank is the implementation of a high-quality sensor. A modern wired device costs approximately PLN 300. It's really not much for a one-time investment in safety and comfort for years. The wired sensor is maintenance-free. No maintenance or battery replacement required. Despite the undeniable benefits of its use, some households still use traditional methods of estimating the tank filling level.
They are based on personal inspection of the tank and independent calculations, e.g. based on average daily water consumption. Unfortunately, such methods can be unreliable and very burdensome - especially for the elderly, people with disabilities, frequent travelers, working a lot, etc. The precision of calculations is reduced by cyclically reduced or increased water consumption, which often occurs during holidays, renovations or guests' stays. Besides, looking into a septic tank every day is not the most pleasant activity...
