A septic tank level sensor is a device responsible for monitoring the amount of liquid in the tank and informing about its filling. Thanks to the use of the sensor, the user can order a sewage removal service in advance, avoiding the costly and health-threatening consequences of overfilling the tank. How does a septic tank level sensor work? How to properly measure the level of waste in the tank? And which solution to choose for your household? You will find the answers to these questions in the article below.

How does a septic tank level sensor work?
The way septic tank level sensors work depends on their type. The model range is currently so extensive that everyone has a chance to find a solution tailored to their septic tank. Modernly designed devices are basically maintenance-free - after installation and configuration, they do not require any involvement on the part of the user. There are wired and wireless sensors to choose from.
The wired septic tank level sensor is a traditional solution, equipped as standard with a cable and power supply, a probe or float and a compact central unit (receiver) that is placed in the house. It is characterized by a simple design, high reliability and efficiency of operation, an attractive price and ease of installation. The distance of the tank from the place where the signal panel is installed does not matter for the efficiency of the device. With the increasing level of contamination in the tank, the float changes position. In the case of the probe, it is placed at a critical level while maintaining a safety buffer of several days. Two-electrode probes are used in tanks with conductive liquids, i.e. water, water solutions, sewage, etc. When the probe comes into contact with such a liquid, an alarm is immediately triggered. In the case of non-conductive liquids, floats can be used. The lighting of the red diode on the central unit signals that the alarm level in the septic tank has been reached. The message often amplifies the sound signal (it can be turned off). For building users, this means one thing - it is time to call a septic tanker.
The wireless septic tank level sensor is based on radio communication between a float in the tank and a signaling device in the building. It offers all the advantages of the wired model, but does not require running a cable infrastructure. More advanced models send SMS messages informing designated recipients about the threat. These can be not only building owners, but also managers or sewage companies directly. When sewage reaches a dangerous level, an appropriate message will be automatically sent from the central unit. The scheme of operation can be flexibly programmed. The signaling device should be located relatively close to the septic tank, which can be problematic in implementation.
How to properly measure the level in a septic tank?
The most effective method of measuring the level of a septic tank is the implementation of a high-quality sensor. A modern device in a wired version costs about PLN 300. This is really not much for a one-time investment in safety and comfort for years. The wired sensor is maintenance-free. It does not require maintenance or replacing batteries. Despite the undeniable benefits of its use, traditional methods of estimating the level of tank filling are still practiced in some households.
They are based on personal tank monitoring and independent calculations, e.g. based on average daily water consumption. Unfortunately, such methods can be unreliable and very inconvenient – especially for the elderly, the disabled, those who travel frequently, those who work a lot, etc. The precision of calculations is reduced by cyclically reduced or increased water consumption, which often occurs during vacations, renovations or guests. In addition, daily checking the septic tank is not one of the most pleasant activities...
Septic tank level sensors, both wireless and wired models, allow you to automate the process of emptying tanks, which translates not only into greater convenience of using the sewage system, but also into real savings in the home budget. The septic tanker does not arrive regularly/cyclically, but when the tank actually needs to be emptied.
