Principle of operation of a hydraulic clutch for a heating system
A hydraulic clutch is a specialist device that allows the connection of heating devices with different or the same operating parameters (e.g. heat pump, gas boiler) and several heating circuits, even if they are characterized by different temperature parameters. This can be, among others, power supply for underfloor heating, power supply for convection heaters or production of domestic hot water.
This device is most often available in the form of a vertical water tank, which has hot connectors in the upper part (supply from the heat source), and cold connectors in the lower part (where the medium returns from the receivers). Proper circulation of the heating medium occurs when each of the connected heating circuits is equipped with its own flow force, i.e. a pump.
Hydraulic clutch – where can it be used?
The hydraulic clutch is used in compact central heating systems, wall-mounted boilers with a built-in pump, and also in medium and high-power systems. In the latter case, the clutch can effectively replace multi-way mixing valves and mixing-pump systems.
How does a hydraulic clutch work? 4 operating states of the device
Starting the system – takes place with the flow of the heating medium through the receivers closed.
The demand for thermal energy on the heating circuit side exceeds the amount of energy produced by the heat source (or sources).
Heat production on the source side is identical to the demand for thermal energy on the receiver side.
Heat production in the source is greater than the demand for heat on the receiver side – among other things, the flow of the medium through the automation of heat receivers is reduced.

It is designed as a tank with nozzles on one side (intended for connecting a heat source) and with nozzles on the other side (adapted for connecting heat receivers). The distributor and the clutch are placed in the tank, which are separated by a partition that allows the flow of the medium from the clutch to the distributor. The entire structure is thermally insulated.
Breather and hydraulic clutch
