What does refrigeration deal with?
Refrigeration is a branch of technology focused on removing heat from the refrigerated environment in order to achieve and maintain temperatures lower than the ambient temperature. There are various ways to achieve lower temperatures. For example, in the Peltier effect, a temperature difference is created by the flow of electric current through a two-material junction. In evaporation, a phenomenon often used in compressor refrigeration devices, the temperature and heat of evaporation depend on pressure. The lower the pressure, the lower the evaporation temperature. On the other hand, in the phenomenon of desorption (the release of gas by a liquid), heat is drawn from the environment. Heat pumps, among others, operate on this principle. It is worth knowing that humans have been cooling both food and interiors for thousands of years. For example, the ancient Egyptians used porous clay vessels, which provided a cooling effect by evaporating part of the contents. The Persians increased the intensity of evaporation by additionally using air blowing. The dynamic development of refrigeration technology did not occur until the 19th century and the industrial revolution that was taking place at that time. Today, (increasingly) advanced, efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration equipment is used to maintain temperatures lower than ambient temperature.
Application of refrigeration equipment
Many industries use cooling systems, but they are of key importance in the food, medical, pharmaceutical, laboratory and catering industries. Cooling is used, among other things, to protect perishable food from the effects of high temperatures. It allows for increased durability of food products and their safe storage and transport. It inhibits the growth of most bacteria and other microorganisms that are dangerous to health. Unlike other methods of food preservation, the cooling process does not change the taste, color or nutritional properties. It is worth remembering that the correct operation of air cooling devices depends not only on their proper selection, quality or configuration, but above all on regular inspections and maintenance. Exceptionally restrictive standards apply to the power supply of laboratory cold rooms, in which medicines, samples, vaccines and biological materials sensitive to the slightest temperature changes are stored.
