Frequency converter - construction
A frequency converter is used to control single- or three-phase AC motors. It converts constant-frequency AC into adjustable-frequency AC. The device consists of various cooperating components. These are:
- rectifier – connected to one or three phases of the AC voltage supply, generates a pulsating DC voltage at the output necessary for the operation of the device; one can distinguish between uncontrolled and controlled rectifiers;
- intermediate circuit – depending on the type of circuit, it converts rectified voltage into direct current, stabilizes and smoothes pulsating direct current or converts direct current into a direct current with an adjustable value;
- inverter – converts constant voltage into regulated alternating voltage with adjustable frequency, generates the frequency of the voltage supplying the motor;
- control and protection system – is responsible for monitoring the operation of the converter, sends and receives control signals that are used to turn on/off the semiconductor valves of the inverter. Each frequency converter is equipped with a control system.
Application of frequency converters
Frequency converters are used to regulate the rotational speed of engines. They provide optimal working conditions by adapting the voltage to the specific load. They enable easy and precise control. It is difficult to imagine the functioning of an automated production line today without the use of frequency converters.
What is the difference between a frequency converter and an inverter?
Inverters, or frequency converters, are a key component of a frequency converter - although in practice the terms "frequency converter" and "inverter" are often used interchangeably (probably due to the simpler pronunciation of the word "inverter"). An inverter is part of a more complex, multi-element device. It is its heart, converting direct current into alternating current characterized by the appropriate frequency. The use of inverters is not limited to frequency converters. They are commonly used in many industries. They can be found, among others, in photovoltaic installations (solar inverters) and in the automotive industry (car inverters).
