What is a fire hydrant?
A hydrant is a device used to draw water directly from the main water supply pipes for utility or fire-fighting purposes. Thanks to hydrants, in the event of a fire, firefighters and other services gain very quick access to water under high pressure. These devices are usually located in easily accessible and visible places. Hydrants are divided into: • external (street) - above-ground and underground, • internal - surface-mounted or recessed, classified as fixed fire extinguishing devices activated manually. The regulations governing the requirements that hydrants should meet, their location, service and related issues can be found in: • The Act of 24 August 1991 on fire protection; • The Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration of 7 June 2010 on fire protection of buildings, other construction objects and areas and in other regulations; • Polish Standards.
Outdoor hydrants
External hydrants are located in the external space. They are used in both urban and industrial conditions. They are usually installed in places where there is a high risk of fire spreading quickly, especially near buildings, forests, parks and crowds. Their role is to provide the fire brigade with immediate access to water to replenish supplies in the fire truck or to directly extinguish the fire after connecting the fire hoses. When choosing an external hydrant, make sure that it meets European safety and quality standards and has anti-corrosion protection.
Internal hydrants
Internal hydrants are located inside buildings used by a large number of people. They are equipped in offices, industrial plants, public utility buildings, etc. An internal hydrant is usually placed in a characteristic, red or white, specially marked box. In the event of a fire, it allows the user to react quickly - before the services arrive at the scene. For internal hydrants, a periodic, usually annual inspection is required.
