Christmas lights are one of the simplest and cheapest ways to create a festive atmosphere at home. They typically adorn the Christmas tree, but often illuminate other places as well, such as windows and windowsills. The installer explains how much electricity Christmas lights consume and what factors affect energy consumption by holiday lighting. He also shows how easy it is to calculate the monthly costs of lighting the lights, assuming they operate for 4, 6, or 8 hours a day, and suggests how to reduce the electricity bill without giving up atmospheric lighting decorations.

What affects the power consumption of Christmas lights?
The power consumption of lights primarily depends on their wattage (W) and the technology used. Although energy-efficient LED Christmas lighting is currently the standard, it is worth remembering that many people still happily use holiday decorations from decades ago, among which traditional strings may appear. In terms of energy efficiency (and not only that), LED lighting outperforms classic bulbs. For example, a string with 100 traditional light points consumes about 25–40 W, while a string with 100 LED diodes has a power of around 4–6 W and shines with similar intensity. You can find information about the technology and wattage on the packaging or product page.
Electricity consumption is also influenced by: the number and type of diodes/bulbs, additional functions (flashing, animations), the quality of the power supply, and the number of hours of lighting per day. For some people, Christmas lights operate non-stop, while for others, it will only be a few hours a day. In some homes, the tree is decorated and illuminated from the first days of December until the first days of January, while in others, the tree is only dressed on Christmas Eve.
Basic method for calculating the power consumption of Christmas lights
To calculate the power consumption for Christmas lights (and any other electrical device), you need to know the device's wattage and the assumed operating time in minutes. Here is a simple formula:
wattage of Christmas lights (W) / 1000 × number of hours of lighting per day x number of days of lighting
Example calculation of the monthly cost of lighting LED Christmas lights
If you also want to know the cost of lighting Christmas lights, multiply the result obtained above by the price of 1 kWh from your electricity supplier. You can check the amount on your last bill. Assuming you have a small tree and a LED string with 100 light points of 6W is sufficient, and the lights will operate for 8 hours a day for a month, you can calculate the cost as follows:
6 W × 8 hours × 30 days = 6 / 1000 × 8 × 30 = 1.44 kWh
1.44 × price of 1 kWh from the operator (1.03 PLN according to data from cena-pradu.pl in 12.2025, G11 tariff) = 1.48 PLN
This means that illuminating the tree for a month will cost you about 1.50 PLN.
How much does it cost to light the tree for 4, 6, and 8 hours a day?
Using the above method, you can easily calculate the costs of lighting the tree for lights of different wattages and selected hours and days of lighting. If you don't want to do manual calculations, you can use calculators available on the websites of electricity suppliers, such as TAURON. In such a tool, you enter the wattage of the lights and the total operating time in minutes. Using one 6W LED string with 100 diodes, you will pay about:
- for 4h of lighting per day – 0.75 PLN,
- for 6h of lighting per day – 1.10 PLN,
- for 8h of lighting per day - 1.50 PLN.
How to reduce power consumption without giving up lighting decorations?
- Choose modern LED lighting – high-quality, certified, with a good power supply. It will be even more energy-efficient, effective, durable, and safe. An LED diode consumes up to 90% less energy than a traditional bulb.
- Use smart technologies. Choose smart Christmas lights, e.g., LED string light with colored light, controlled by an app on your smartphone. You can also buy lights with a built-in timer or a smart socket. These solutions allow you to manage the lighting time so that the illumination does not operate unnecessarily around the clock.
- Embrace minimalism. Consider whether a spectacular illumination of interiors and gardens, like in American Christmas movies, is really necessary and whether it won't disturb your neighbors. The top trend of recent seasons is minimalist, elegant lighting decorations.

FAQ
1. Is it worth replacing old Christmas lights with modern LEDs?
Absolutely! LED Christmas lights consume significantly less energy, do not heat up, and have a lifespan of several tens of thousands of hours, which translates into real savings, greater safety, and environmental care.
2. How much will a string of 100 LEDs cost if it shines for 6 hours a day throughout December?
About 1 PLN.
3. What affects the power consumption of Christmas lights?
It depends on the wattage of the lights, the technology (LED vs traditional bulbs), the number and type of light points, additional functions, and the intensity of use.
4. How to calculate the power consumption of Christmas lights?
Just use a simple formula: wattage of the lights (W) / 1000 × number of hours of operation per day × number of days.
The result is the energy consumption in kWh.
5. How to calculate the cost of lighting Christmas lights?
You need to multiply the energy consumption calculated using the above formula by the price of 1 kWh from your operator (the rate can be found on your last electricity bill).
