Electricity and water at the construction site. Tips and best practices

Added: Tuesday, 7/25/2023

Without electricity and water at the construction site, it would be difficult to carry out subsequent stages of activities. How to ensure proper connection so that everything is done legally, in accordance with applicable law and safely?

Mains electricity

The best solution for access to electricity on a construction site is to connect to the power grid. It is a stable, safe and, equally important, legal solution. By choosing this option, you do not have to worry that there will be a power outage at some point, except in special situations in which there is a network failure, which fortunately does not happen very often. The procedure for connecting electricity requires meeting certain requirements. First of all, you should obtain information whether the plot has been prepared with a connection enabling electricity to be supplied from the network. Most often, this information can be obtained when purchasing the land, and it is one of the most important pieces of information.

The completed form, together with a document confirming the legal title to the land and a map (a site sketch is a sufficient document) should be submitted to the energy company. From the moment the document is submitted, the energy company has 14 days to precisely determine the connection conditions, i.e. the scope of work that must be performed in order for the electricity to be connected.

It should be noted that at this stage precise guidelines are formulated that must be met, such as the place where the measuring device will be located, the type of measuring and billing device or the size of pre-meter security. Along with the guidelines, the energy company also prepares a contract template that includes information on connection costs and the deadline for completing the work. In turn, the contract for the sale of electricity is signed when all planned works are completed. The entire procedure is quite time-consuming, from the moment of submitting the application to signing the contract, it can take from several to even a dozen or so months.

Making a permanent connection is a very advantageous solution, but unfortunately the entire procedure takes time. An alternative to this solution is a temporary connection, which is made by the energy company. The cost of making a temporary connection is the responsibility of the person applying for it. Then, at the investor's request, the energy company "supplies" electricity to the construction site directly from an overhead or cable line, creating a special construction switchgear, usually located on a power pole.

Power from the generator

This is a way to start work while the procedure for making a permanent connection is being verified and implemented. Thanks to the units, there is no need to wait, and some work can be started much earlier than the decision is issued. However, it should be noted that the device segment is quite wide and the available models differ in parameters, which also determine the price of the devices. It is important to ensure that you choose a device that is tailored to your needs.

Water on the construction site

Its delivery can be done in various ways, but taking into account the demand, it will be necessary to carry out work to ensure constant access. Depending on the location of the facility and detailed factors, there are two options to choose from - preparing a well or connecting to the water and sewage network. A well seems to be potentially a more advantageous solution, especially in the context of required permits, which saves time. Unfortunately, not in every place a well will be a profitable solution, the needs should be carefully analyzed, especially since its construction is not a cheap solution. In the case of connections to the water and sewage network, special permits will be required, which, as in the case of electricity, requires the submission of an appropriate application.
