Electricity and water at the construction site. Tips and best practices

Added: Monday, 7/20/2026

Without electricity and water on the construction site, it would be difficult to carry out the next stages of the activities. How to ensure the proper connection so that the whole thing is done legally, in accordance with the applicable law and safely?

Electricity from the grid

The best solution for access to electricity on a construction site is to connect to the power grid. This is a stable, safe and, equally importantly, legal solution. By choosing this option, you do not have to worry that the power will run out at some point, except for special situations in which the grid fails, which fortunately does not happen very often. The procedure for connecting the power requires meeting certain requirements. First, you need to obtain information on whether a connection has been prepared for the plot, allowing for the supply of electricity from the grid. Most often, this information can be obtained when purchasing the land, and it is one of the most important pieces of information.

The completed form, together with a document confirming legal title to the land, a map (a situational sketch is sufficient) should be submitted to the power plant. From the moment the document is submitted, the power plant has 14 days to precisely define the connection conditions, i.e. the scope of work that must be performed so that the electricity can be connected.

It should be noted that at this stage precise guidelines are formulated that must be met, such as the location of the measuring device, the type of measuring and billing device or the size of the pre-meter protection. Along with the guidelines, the power plant also prepares a model agreement, which includes information on the connection costs and the deadline for completing the work. In turn, the electricity sales agreement is signed when all the planned work has been completed. The entire procedure is quite time-consuming, from the moment of submitting the application to signing the agreement, several to even a dozen or so months can pass.

Making a permanent connection is a very beneficial solution, unfortunately going through the whole procedure takes time. An alternative to this solution is a temporary connection, which is made by a power company. The cost of making a temporary connection is the responsibility of the person applying for it. Then, at the request of the investor, the power company "supplies" electricity to the construction site directly from an overhead or cable line, creating a special construction switchboard, usually located on a power pole.

This is a way to start work while the procedure for making a permanent connection is being verified and performed. Thanks to generators, you don't have to wait, and some work can be started much earlier than the decision is issued. However, it should be noted that the segment of devices is quite wide, and the available models differ in parameters, which also determine the price of the devices. It is necessary to ensure that you choose a device that is tailored to your needs.

Water on the construction site

It can be delivered in various ways, but taking into account the demand, it will be necessary to carry out work to ensure constant access. Depending on the location of the facility and specific factors, there are two options to choose from - preparing a well or connecting to the water and sewage system. A well seems to be a potentially more beneficial solution, especially in the context of the required permits, which saves time. Unfortunately, a well will not be a cost-effective solution in every place, the needs should be carefully analyzed, especially since its construction is not a cheap solution. In the case of connections to the water and sewage system, special permits will be required, which, as in the case of electricity, requires the submission of an appropriate application.
