Is it worth heating with an air conditioner in winter?
Many people fear that heating with air conditioning in winter may have a dramatic impact on their bills. Meanwhile, heating rooms with an air conditioner can be relatively cheap - much depends on the energy-saving class of the devices themselves. It is worth choosing air conditioners in class A+++ for heating and be sure to check the product card - an important issue is the difference between the heating power of the units and their electricity consumption.
The heating power of the devices is usually higher than the cooling power. For example, for an air conditioner with a cooling capacity of 3.5 kW, the heating power is usually 4 kW. At the same time, the maximum power consumption in heating mode is, for example, 1 kW. Then you need to estimate how many hours a good air conditioner will work per year and multiply this number with the cost of 1 kWh in the electricity supplier's tariff. Let's count.
Is heating with an air conditioner economical? Calculations
The cost of heating with air conditioning can be small and much lower than when using standard electric heaters or heaters. However, experts emphasize that electricity prices are increasing, so the most profitable solution is to use air conditioners as devices that heat selected rooms in the house. Many people now treat air conditioning as one of the most economical ways of heating rooms with electricity in the transitional season or as a quick way to heat rooms in winter.
- Let's multiply 8 hours of work per day by 200 days (that's how many days a year the heating season in Poland lasts). In this case, the air conditioner will consume electricity for 1,600 hours a year.
- We multiply 1600 h by 1kW (estimated power consumption in the heating mode of a device with a cooling capacity of 3.5 kW). This gives a result of 1600 kWh
- We multiply 1,600 kWh by PLN 0.89 (this was the average price of electricity on the competitive market in the first quarter of 2023). It amounts to PLN 1,424 - this is the estimated annual cost of heating a room with an air conditioner if we use the device for 8 hours and for 200 days, and unless electricity prices increase.
