Shaft pipes, also called riser pipes, are very important structural elements of many sewage and drainage wells. They ensure a connection between the surface and the base and increase the durability of manholes built on their basis. What makes a shaft pipe stand out? What are the characteristics of a corrugated stem pipe? And which product should I choose for the planned application? Onninen experts answer the most common questions from customers.

What is special about a stem pipe?
There are two main types of shaft pipes:
- smooth shaft pipes ,
- corrugated shaft pipes - you can read more about them in the next paragraph.
The smooth shaft pipe is part of the external sewage system. It is an element of a plastic sewage well. It is made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It is distinguished by its smooth surface and lack of a cup. It often has an intense color, e.g. bright orange, making identification easier. The standard outer diameter of the pipe is 400 mm.
Shaft pipes allow them to be adapted to individual needs. They can be easily cut to the required length using a hand or power saw. The cutting area requires deburring.
What are the characteristics of a corrugated stem pipe?
A more popular solution is corrugated stem pipes. They are manufactured using polypropylene (PP) - a modern, extremely durable and flexible plastic. They have a characteristic, corrugated (rippled) external surface. They come mainly in black and orange. The corrugated shaft pipe is used in drainage, through, collective and control wells.
Corrugated shaft pipes have increased resistance to stress, impact, extreme temperatures and various chemical compounds. They are not threatened even by significant burdens related to, among others: with road traffic. They flexibly adapt to changing field conditions. They are also very easy to install. Between the shaft pipe and the base, in a deep groove, there is a gasket that guarantees a reliable connection. Thanks to this, sewage does not penetrate the ground and groundwater does not enter the sewage system. The durability of PP material is estimated at up to 100 years.
Selection of the appropriate shaft pipe diameter
Shaft pipes come in several nominal diameters: 315 mm, 425 mm, 600 mm and 1000 mm. The diameter should be adapted to the parameters of the well, which may consist of a cover, a shaft pipe, a gasket and a through or collective base. The inner diameter of the shaft pipe must correspond to the inner diameter of the base, e.g. 315 mm / 315 mm.
