What types of keys are there?
Even though most keys are well known and recognizable, there is a problem when it comes to dividing, naming and selecting them. This is because there are so many of them, it is easy to get lost in the diversity. To organize our knowledge, we have prepared this helpful list and answer what types of keys are there?
Open-end wrenches
Let's start with what's easiest. Open-end wrenches are what everyone sees - they are the most popular type of wrenches, used in a huge number of tasks. They are designed to fit as precisely as possible to the screws that are to be unscrewed or tightened. Of course, they are suitable if the screw is easily accessible. Otherwise, you need to use a different type of key.
Socket wrench (ratchet)
A ratchet wrench , also known as a socket wrench, is much better at this task. As the name suggests - special sockets in the shape of a hexagonal hole are used, which allows for effective unscrewing or tightening of screws, also in hard-to-reach places. This is much faster than with a regular open-end wrench.
Allen key
Of course, this list must also include an Allen key , which is an invaluable aid in countless tasks, for example when assembling furniture, repairing a bicycle and many others.
Tubular wrench
A pipe wrench is used in virtually all plumbing work. It is characterized by high durability, but also quite heavy.
Swedish key
A Swedish wrench is also essential in plumbing. Also called an adjustable pipe wrench, it has a characteristic handle with a pliers structure. It is no accident that its inventor - Johan Petter Johansson gave it the nickname "the iron hand".
Wrench
Without the popular "Frenchman" it's hard to think about a decent job. The wrench can be adapted to the type of work performed, which is ensured by its specially adjustable handle. It is also invaluable for every plumber when you need to tighten or loosen bolts or nuts with large diameters (also cylindrical).
Hook wrench
A very interesting solution is also a hook wrench , the special feature of which are hook-shaped jaws, providing a strong grip and perfectly coping with nuts and bolts with damaged edges.
Impact wrench
An impact wrench provides real convenience during work, because the basis of operation is an impact, thanks to which we can quickly and effortlessly tighten and loosen screws.
How to choose the right wrench for installation work?
We have already learned about the different types of keys, learning the most important things about their characteristics. This makes it easier to adjust them according to your needs. When choosing a key for appropriate installation work, he must evaluate its suitability. It can be said that universal open-end wrenches of various sizes are sufficient for many tasks. However, there are situations when they will not be appropriate, especially when the screw is mounted in a hard-to-reach place. In this situation, we must have socket wrenches (ratchet wrenches) at our disposal, or perhaps a more specialized type of wrenches, described above, hook wrenches.
Every workshop must also have access to an Allen key. Or preferably a whole set of this type of keys in different sizes. They do not take up much space and are handy. If we want to ensure great comfort while performing various types of tasks while screwing and unscrewing screws, we should definitely choose an impact wrench. A separate category of wrenches are those used for hydraulic work. And here it is worth having different types of wrenches, such as tubular, Swedish and French wrenches.
