Ball valves in central heating installations

A reliable element connecting wall-mounted boilers with the central heating installation are ball valves - straight or angular. If you need to perform maintenance on your heating device or renovate the installation, they will allow you to cut off a selected part of it and drain it. Depending on the type selected, ball valves can also be used to connect heat pumps and other devices operating in the installation.

Shut-off valves should be installed on the supply and return of the heat source - regardless of the type of device (heat pump, gas boiler, solid fuel boiler). This is beneficial due to the possibility of carrying out service work. Moreover, valves located behind and in front of the circulation pumps will allow you to quickly and safely dismantle them, without having to drain the water in the installation. They can also act as valves that isolate the heat buffer from the rest of the installation, which is recommended by the buffer manufacturers.

Ball valves in the water supply system

Ball valves are an essential element of the water meter set. They should be placed both before and after the water meter. It is also beneficial to install valves on both sides of the mesh filter, which will allow it to be cleaned without having to drain the medium from the installation.

Another element of the water supply system that requires valves is the hot water tank. Also in this case, tank manufacturers recommend that each connection be equipped with a shut-off valve. Regardless of the installation location, shut-off ball valves will be used to close and open the flow. They should not be used as throttling or flow regulating elements.

Which ball valves should I choose?

Valvex from Małopolska is considered a national leader in the segment of ball valves and installation fittings. This status is confirmed by a specialized report prepared by the prestigious B2B Research and Solutions Institute KERALLA REASERCH entitled "Valves and radiators 2020 - 2022". Despite the recognized brand, the company's management constantly invests in new technologies, production machines and product range development. The installation offer is constantly being expanded, hence the Polish manufacturer's portfolio systematically includes new installation fittings products, especially valves.

The SPIN DN 25 and SPIN DN 20 ball valves with a filter and neodymium magnet, introduced in mid-February this year, are the latest proposition in the Valvex installation portfolio. It is an extension of the SPIN series, appreciated by installers, i.e. valves equipped with unions integrated with the body.

New sizes of connection valves

SPIN DN 25 is an ergonomic tool for connecting indoor units of heat pumps and other devices operating in central heating, cooling, as well as hot and cold water installations.

It is offered in two versions: G1–G1 with a nut with a diameter of 1" and G1–G5/4 with a nut with a diameter of 5/4". Valves with these dimensions allow them to be used to connect heat pumps whose connections have external threads with diameters analogous to the above-mentioned ones.

Valves in the G1–G1 version can be used to connect devices such as a zone valve, dirt separator, hydraulic coupling or pump group.

Importantly, SPIN DN20 valves are characterized by a high Kv coefficient - as much as 18.28 m3/h. Therefore, they have a high throughput, thanks to which you can successfully use them in installations with heat pumps, which have particularly high requirements regarding the lack of elements that choke the flow in the installation.

Comprehensive protection of installations with ball valves

SPIN DN 20 ball valve with filter and neodymium magnet

The SPIN DN 20 ball valve with a filter and a neodymium magnet is a valve designed to protect installation elements against solid and magnetic contamination. You can use it in hot and cold water supply installations, as well as in central heating and cooling installations. It is especially recommended for use in systems with a gas boiler with a 3/4" diameter connection. It will also work well in systems where protection against magnetic particles of circulation pumps and exchangers is necessary.

An important parameter that distinguishes the SPIN DN 20 ball valve is the magnet force of 6200 Gs. Combining this value with the size of the valve, it makes it one of the most universal valves available on the Polish market. Despite its small size, SPIN DN 20 with a filter and a neodymium magnet has a high Kv coefficient of 4.20 m3/h. The valve's throughput is therefore comparable to much larger dirt separators. This allows you to place the ball valve in installations with insufficient installation space where other devices will not fit.

The role of the neodymium magnet is to eliminate magnetic impurities from the medium in the installation. Magnetic particles not only pose a threat to the operation of circulation pumps, but also reduce the efficiency of exchangers in heating devices. These contaminants arise in the installation mainly as a result of corrosion processes, although they may also be a side effect of installation works.

The second important element of the ball valve is a mesh filter with a mesh size of 400 µm. It is responsible for retaining other non-magnetic solid impurities. Inserting the magnet into a removable brass cover is intended to protect it against corrosion processes. Moreover, it allows for thorough cleaning of individual elements from accumulated magnetic particles. When you pull the magnet out of the shield, the particles will fall off on their own, whereas removing them directly from the magnet would be impossible.
