How to remove silicone?
Siliconing is an activity that is performed in every home during finishing works. Over time, all silicone loses its properties, especially if it is exposed to moisture, such as in shower cabins. The deterioration of parameters, protection and the unsightly black appearance of silicone make many people decide to replace it. First, however, you need to thoroughly remove the old layer, but - how to do it effectively?
One of the still more popular methods is a knife. In well-equipped stores you can get dedicated knives for removing silicone. It has a special shape, pointed, and is sometimes confused with a knife for cutting plasterboards. Be very careful when using a knife, this method is effective, but it is easy to scratch the surrounding surface. It is worth being aware that the knife may not completely remove the old layer of silicone, in such a situation it will be necessary to use dedicated chemicals.
Silicone removers
Chemical agents soften the old layer of silicone, making it easier to remove. They work so effectively that after application, all you need is a spatula and a paper towel to get rid of the remains.
The most important thing when choosing the right product is to pay attention to its application. Individual preparations are dedicated to removing other types of silicones. Roofing silicone is mainly removed with acetone, although you can also try to get rid of it with home methods, e.g. vinegar. Special removers are also available for sale.
On the other hand, acrylic silicone is best removed when it is fresh and soft. Old silicone can be removed mechanically (with a knife, spatula or scraper) or chemically (special agents, although a solvent or other substances available at every construction site may also work).
Glass-making silicone is relatively easy to remove, but if it is old, dried silicone, then e.g. dishwashing liquid is a great solution. It allows for softening and removal of material remnants. A greasy cream may also work.
High-temperature silicone resistant to high temperatures requires the use of dedicated chemicals.
