Is it worth having a generator during a New Year's Eve party?

Added: Tuesday, 12/16/2025

A sudden power outage can ruin or even end a New Year's Eve party. It's hard to imagine welcoming the new year without music, lighting, or hot dishes. That's why organizers of New Year's Eve celebrations - and increasingly also home users - decide to purchase or rent a generator. Find out what a generator is, whether it's worth having one for New Year's Eve, which model to choose, and how to use it safely in winter conditions.

What is a generator and what is it used for?

A generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. It is usually equipped with a powerful gasoline engine and a large fuel tank. It serves as a reliable power source in emergency situations and in places without access to the electrical grid. There are two main types:

Generators can power various devices: from small lamps, through sound systems, to all electrical equipment used at the event location.

When does a generator make sense during New Year's Eve?

A generator can be a great insurance for a New Year's Eve party - especially if the event:

  • takes place outdoors, e.g., in a garden, on a terrace, or in a gazebo, far from the grid, and you care about energy independence or cannot afford a power outage (outage = end of the party);
  • requires stable power - for sound systems, stage lighting, multimedia systems,Scheppach SG5200D DIESEL generator heaters, or catering equipment.

If you plan to purchase or rent a generator for New Year's Eve, do it in advance so you can test the device at least 1 day earlier – with full load or at least half of the expected power. Despite having a generator, it's wise to have a backup plan in case of device failure or fuel shortage. When setting up the generator in the garden, choose a location as far away from the windows of nearby residential buildings as possible to avoid disturbing the neighbors with excessive noise.

Which generator to choose for home and garden?

A generator for home and garden should:

  • be easy to operate,
  • offer sufficient power to supply the selected electrical devices,
  • be convenient to transport and store,
  • operate relatively quietly to avoid disturbing others.

The output power of the generator should be about 30% greater than the total power of all devices that will be powered by it. For home use, a single-phase model with a power of 2-3 kW should be sufficient – preferably with a quiet and easy-to-operate gasoline engine and an AVR voltage stabilization system, which allows for safe powering of sensitive electronics (computers, TVs, laptops).

It is worth considering the purchase of a usually more expensive hybrid generator with sockets for 230V and 400V. It will also be able to provide three-phase electricity for more powerful devices, such as large power tools, induction cooktops, or electric car chargers.

Rules for safe use of the generator in winter

Winter poses additional challenges. Low temperatures, snow, ice, rain, and limited ventilation can threaten the safety and efficiency of the generator's operation. Above all, the generator, due to the real risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, must be used outdoors or in a technical room with forced air circulation, away from flammable materials. The device should not be exposed to direct weather conditions. Outdoors, the generator should be placed on an elevated surface and be under a dedicated cover that does not block ventilation. In winter, it is necessary to use special low-viscosity engine oil, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, and to ensure the freshness of the fuel. Before the winter season, it is advisable to have a professional inspection and service of the device to check the oil and fuel levels, the cleanliness of the filters, and the condition of the wires, as well as to make necessary replacements/repairs.

FAQ

1. Can a generator be used in a home garage with the doors open?

No, due to the real risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can enter living spaces. The generator should be used outdoors or in a properly ventilated room.

2. What generator is sufficient for a small New Year's Eve party in the garden?

In most cases, a small inverter generator with a power of 2–3 kW will be sufficient. It offers an ideal compromise between power, noise level, and the safety of powered devices. Additionally, it is easy to move and set up in the chosen location in the garden.

3. Can a generator power delicate electronics?

Yes, but only if it is equipped with an AVR voltage stabilization system, which allows for safe connection of laptops, TVs, or audio equipment.

4. Where is the best place to set up a generator in winter?

On a stable, elevated surface, in a location sheltered from direct rain and snow, with good ventilation and away from the windows of residential buildings.

5. Can a generator be rented just for New Year's Eve night?

Yes. Look for construction and gardening equipment rental services in your area. Most offer flexible rental times – even by the hour.
