What is a drainage sewage treatment plant?
Drainage treatment plants are installations designed to neutralize sewage from properties not connected to the municipal sewage system . They consist of two basic elements - a septic tank and a drainage system. The first one is used for preliminary sewage treatment. Then, it is directed to a distribution well and a drainage pipe system is led to the filtration field.
There, through natural biological processes and filtration in the ground, the sewage undergoes final purification. After such treatment, it can safely enter groundwater or soil. Drainage treatment plants are an attractive solution for investors in many ways. They are cheap to maintain, convenient, environmentally friendly and, most importantly, enable effective neutralization of impurities.
Application of drainage treatment plants
Despite many advantages, drainage treatment plants also have some disadvantages. The most serious of them are the limitations in the construction of such installations. In order for it to be possible, it is necessary to meet at least two conditions regarding:
- soil permeability : drainage treatment plants require soils with good or at least medium permeability;

How do drainage treatment plants work?
The operation of drainage treatment plants is based on a two-stage sewage treatment process: in the septic tank (anaerobic treatment) and in the seepage drainage (aerobic treatment). Selected microorganisms play a key role in neutralizing pollutants, and final cleaning takes place in the field (mechanical filtration process). The entire cycle consists of the following successive steps:
- directing sewage to a septic tank;
- the process of methane fermentation, in which anaerobic microorganisms decompose organic matter;
- directing pre-cleaned wastewater to a distribution well and then to the drainage pipe system (plot);
- aerobic purification (aeration) using oxygen supplied by means of aeration mushrooms;
- infiltration of sewage from drainage pipes laid on permeable ground - for example a layer of gravel - and further cleaning of the impurities through decomposition using aerobic microorganisms.
To ensure appropriate conditions and treatment efficiency, a domestic sewage treatment plant can be equipped with additional elements, such as an absorption well or an aeration well.
