Radiant Heating – Why Should You Consider It in Your Home?

Added: Wednesday, 9/25/2024

Radiant heating is an example of a heating system in which heat is supplied by infrared radiation. Heat is transferred to the environment directly from the heat source, i.e. radiators or special panels. What are the properties of radiant heating and how can it be optimally used?

What are radiant heaters?

They do not use the convection phenomenon, but emit heat energy directly to the environment. Electromagnetic waves are used here, which, as they spread, encounter various objects on their way - furniture, walls, but also people - are absorbed by them and then converted into heat. This technique means that they do not heat the air filling the room, but objects directly.

Please note that infrared heaters can be powered by electricity, however it is incorrect to use the terms electric and radiant heating interchangeably.

What are the properties of radiation heating?

The method of operation of radiant heaters makes them a very effective way of heating rooms. The fact that in radiant heating there is no need to heat the air around it, and only the objects are heated, makes it a more effective and economical solution, allowing for real savings.

In traditional heating systems, heated air rises and cooler air falls down. The lack of air flow brings with it additional advantages, which consist in eliminating the problem of raising dust or allergens in the room. Thanks to this, radiation is perfect as heating for allergy sufferers.

Radiant heating allows for even heat distribution in a room, which allows for easy elimination of so-called “cold spots” known from traditional heating. Infrared radiation acting directly on objects makes radiant heaters heat more efficiently, helping to provide immediate thermal comfort.

How to most effectively use radiant heaters?

Radiant heaters are a practical and energy-saving solution. However, it is worth knowing how to optimize and properly use the possibilities. One of the most important issues is the proper arrangement of heaters. When using infrared heating panels, it is best to install them, for example, on the ceiling or wall.

Objects in its “path”, such as furniture or other objects, including curtains, will block the radiation, making the heating ineffective. A good solution is to use so-called zone heating. It works particularly well in larger rooms, where it is more profitable to install several smaller sources, evenly distributed. This allows you to ensure an optimal temperature throughout the room.

Infrared heaters can be used effectively when the temperature is set optimally. A thermostat will work great here, helping to control the temperature in rooms very precisely. Time programmers are an excellent solution, thanks to which you can set the appropriate schedule. This is a simple way to avoid excessive heating of surfaces, e.g. at night, or when no one is at home. Infrared heating works effectively when the settings are properly optimized. Remember to set the heater's power to your needs. The solution will work great in the case of well-insulated rooms, hence it is important to properly seal doors and windows. Heat losses cause a decrease in operating efficiency and increase bills.
