Safe use of extension cord reels – what to pay attention to?

Added: Wednesday, 4/16/2025

Drum extension cords allow you to increase the range of electricity in places where electrical sockets are separated by a large distance from receivers, e.g. in gardens, warehouses, workshops or on construction sites. Winding a long, often several dozen-meter cable onto a special drum significantly facilitates the use, storage and carrying of the extension cord. In this article, we look at the safety of using drum extension cords. We explain what to look for when choosing and using them so that work with electrical devices is carried out in a safe, effective and comfortable manner.

What is an extension cord reel?

Drum extension cords, like other extension cords and splitters , They are used to increase the range of power supply in households, offices, warehouses, workshops, green areas and construction sites. The advantage of reel models is mobility and ease of use. They can be easily moved, unrolled and rolled up depending on the needs. Reel extension cords come in various lengths and versions. The choice of a given model should take into account the place and specificity of work and requirements Extension cord ALBERO-330 OW 3x1.5 3x230V, plug 230V -20m IP65 14301-1 F-ELEKTRO

devices that are to be connected to the extension cord and used at the same time. In case of any doubts, it is worth consulting the purchase with a qualified electrician. This applies especially to power extension cords (three-phase), intended for use with highly energy-intensive devices.

Rules for the safe use of reel extension cords

1) Follow the manufacturer's instructions

Treat the manufacturer's guidelines and instructions for a given cable drum as a priority. For your own safety and the safety of the equipment you are using, as well as to meet the warranty conditions, it is worth taking a moment to thoroughly read the attached instructions.

2) Match the technical parameters

Make sure that the extension cord reel is compatible with electrical devices that require power. The maximum current load is very important - do not exceed it. For the operation of a wide range of electrical devices, extension cords that can transfer current up to 16A are suitable . Models up to 10A are great for work around the house and garden.

In difficult environmental conditions, e.g. on construction sites, insulated extension cords should be used, in which the insulation of the wires is made of materials with increased strength. They are highly resistant to atmospheric factors and mechanical damage. In addition, they remain flexible at sub-zero temperatures. The IK protection class also indicates the resistance of the housing to impact and mechanical damage.

If the extension cord is to be used outside buildings, pay special attention to the IP tightness class, i.e. resistance to water and dust. The tightness of the purchased reel extension cord should correspond to specific environmental conditions. For example, a model in the IP44 class will be resistant to dust and water splashes. It is good if the sockets have additional protection in the form of protective flaps.

3) Avoid overload

One of the biggest mistakes when using reel extension cords is overloading the cable. Never connect too many devices at once, especially if they are high-power devices. Extension cords have a specific maximum power that they can safely handle. Overloading can lead to overheating of the cable, which can damage it and may create a risk of fire. The so-called "chaining", i.e. connecting several shorter extension cords together, is prohibited. Such a procedure increases the risk of overload and failure.

4) Check the technical condition regularly

Regularly check the technical condition of the extension cord. If you notice any damage (e.g. cracks or abrasions) or you notice a characteristic burning smell during use, immediately stop using the extension cord and replace or repair the damaged component. Using a faulty extension cord is dangerous and may pose a risk of short circuit or even electric shock.

5) Work with the cable fully unrolled

When using an extension cord, the cord should be completely unwound. This is crucial for safety, especially when using high-power devices. Crumpling can increase the risk of overheating and fire. Therefore, try to match the length of the extension cord to your actual needs. Do not buy a 50-meter extension cord if you only need 10 or 20 meters. A cord that is too long will tangle and interfere with your work. It is also more time-consuming to wind. In addition, the voltage drops with the increase in the length of the cord, which can cause interference with electrical devices.

6) Keep it tidy Splitter on metal drum MIDI - 290 4x230V IP44 + thermal relay ONNLINE 14569FR

After finishing work, wind the cable onto the drum – it will be less susceptible to mechanical damage, easier to transport and more convenient to store. Remove any knots and twists, as they can damage the insulation. Store the drum extension cord in a dry place, away from heat sources.
