What products should be used in electrical installations for medical facilities?

Added: Wednesday, 7/21/2021

The electrical installation in a home differs significantly from the requirements for social institutions where there is a significant amount of traffic and the use of electrical devices. Facilities classified as hazardous rooms include, among others: transport facilities, shopping centers, cultural facilities, sports facilities and, above all, medical facilities. The complexes are subject to stricter standards regarding the requirements for the protection of objects and equipment. High requirements apply primarily to the properties of the materials used. Are you wondering what conditions must be met for a medical facility to be approved for use? Read the article and see what you should focus on when installing electrical installations in medical facilities.

Electrical installation in medical facilities

From this text you will learn:

  • what standards you must meet when installing electrical installations in medical facilities,
  • what material parameters should be taken into account when selecting products for electrical installations,
  • product overview at Onninen.

Electrical installation in medical facilities - requirements

Medical facilities have very strict rules regarding assembly and products used in electrical installations. If the contractor does not comply with building regulations, the building will not be permitted for public use. All rules applied are aimed at the safety of its users, which is extremely important, especially in complexes that save human lives.

Fire safety and electrical installations

The level of fire safety in medical centers should be as high as possible. The electrical installation in hospitals must be failure-free, free from any disruptions in the power supply, because it may cause disruptions in the operation of laboratories, operating rooms and the building coordination system. This primarily affects the lives of patients and the work of medical staff. The implemented fire safety rules should shorten the evacuation time to a minimum and do not cause any potential threats.

In accordance with the standards describing electrical installations, electrical installation material used in rooms classified as buildings with a high concentration of people must have the following properties:

  • self-extinguishing properties,
  • low smoke emission rate,
  • resistance to fire expansion,
  • high resistance to high temperatures (up to 105'C, short-term up to +140'C)

Necessary material parameters to perform electrical installations in medical facilities

Electrical installation in medical facilities

Selecting appropriate materials that will meet the specified safety standards is not easy. The electrical installation in the house differs significantly from the standards applicable to buildings classified as high-traffic. Adapting the standards requires specialist knowledge and appropriate materials that will allow you to create an electrical installation adapted to the set standards.

These types of specialized requirements are met by halogen-free electrical installation material . Its properties are much greater than those of ordinary materials used for electrical installations in homes or buildings for other purposes. Halogen-free plastics primarily do not contain toxic or corrosive substances, such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine or astatine. Thanks to this, the material does not emit toxic smoke during a fire, which may pose a threat to life and cause corrosion of metals.

Kopos products that meet the requirements of electrical installations in medical facilities

When creating a design of electrical installations, it is necessary to take into account the properties of cable management systems that will meet the requirements for buildings with heavy traffic. The Kopos company is a manufacturer of, among others: plastic, halogen-free electrical installation materials, enabling safe installation of installations in medical facilities. The company offers rigid and flexible casing pipes, electrical installation boxes and strips with accessories, as well as cable support systems.

Rigid, halogen-free plastic tubes

halogen-free plastic tube They are characterized by high temperature resistance , which ranges from - 45° C to + 90° C. The tubes are intended for installation on building materials with resistance levels A - C 3. The material used in production is self-extinguishing and resistant to flame spread. We will use these elements in rooms of hazardous zone 2, at risk of explosion. The tubes are manufactured in three classes of mechanical strength, marked as follows:

  • low strength (320 N),
  • medium strength (720 N),
  • high strength (1250 N).

Flexible halogen-free tubes

They are intended for mechanical protection of cables. Flexible, halogen-free, self-extinguishing tubes are suitable for installation on the plaster surface, under the plaster or on concrete. Suitable for installation in partitions, ceilings and plasterboard walls. From a fire protection perspective, halogen-free tubes are suitable for installation in facilities where the emphasis is on protecting people or valuable property, for example: public buildings, hospitals, schools, theaters, airports and shopping centers, etc.

Their fixed arrangement allows for thermal resistance ranging from - 40° C to + 120° C. However, if their arrangement is movable, the temperature range is from - 5° C to + 120° C.

Halogen-free strips

The strips do not contain halogen elements and are suitable for places where there are a large number of people. They are resistant to aggressive and chemical environments. They are not resistant to UV radiation and are not suitable for outdoor use. They have heat resistance from - 15° C to + 60° C. They are intended for installation on building materials with a flammability grade of A-C3.

Fire protection electrical installation boxes Fire protection electrical installation boxes

KSK PO boxes are equipped with a ceramic strip and remain functional in the event of a fire. The boxes are attached to the ground using concrete anchors (part of the equipment). The boxes are intended for use only on high voltage cables with proven functionality in a fire. Easy installation of cables thanks to flexible membranes in the box housing. The whole thing is made of halogen-free material.
