Types of washbasins for a small bathroom

One of the aspects that influence the size of a washbasin is its type. When choosing a sanitary facility for a small bathroom, you should carefully familiarize yourself with the most popular solutions available on the market:

Countertop washbasins

A countertop washbasin - as the name suggests - is mounted on a waterproof countertop or cabinet. It is usually characterized by quite high edges and a modern design. Due to the installation method, it is worth ensuring that the countertop is at the appropriate height to make using the washbasin comfortable and hassle-free. The place of contact between the toilet and the surface on which it is mounted also requires attention. Due to the humid environment, contaminants may accumulate there.

A countertop washbasin will be a great idea for a small bathroom, because the space it occupies will also allow you to store various things - either on the countertop itself or in the cabinet underneath.

Undercounter washbasins

An undercounter washbasin is one of the most attractive solutions available on the market. The sanitary ware and the countertop into which it is recessed actually form one surface. This prevents the creation of places where contaminants could accumulate. These types of washbasins feature a minimalist design and are perfect for use in modern designs. They require the tabletop to be raised to a slightly greater height so that the user can use them in a comfortable position.

Undercounter washbasins work well in small bathrooms because additional items can usually be stored under the countertops where they are installed. However, you must take into account that their installation elements are also hidden there.

Corner washbasins

A corner washbasin is installed where two walls meet. In the very corner there is usually a bathroom faucet and a small space for cosmetics. Most often, toilets of this type are small in size. They are also available in variants with a corner cabinet, which allows for additional storage space.

Due to the possibility of installing a corner washbasin in a very limited space, it is perfect for a small bathroom.

Furniture washbasins

While countertop and recessed washbasins require the selection of an appropriate countertop or cabinet, furniture variants are ready-made solutions. They are sold together with the cabinets, which makes their assembly easier and faster. The sanitary ware usually covers the entire surface of the furniture, so it does not cause any problems in keeping it clean.

For obvious reasons, a washbasin combined with a cabinet is a great solution for a small bathroom.

Wall-hung and standing washbasins

Finally, it is also worth mentioning hanging washbasins, mounted directly to the wall. They are characterized by visible assembly elements, so it is worth paying attention to the aesthetics of the siphon. An alternative solution will be to install a half-pedestal that hides pipes and connections. Classic models supported on full pedestals or profiled legs are called standing. Although they are going out of fashion, they can still be found in the offers of some manufacturers.

Both of these solutions are not best suited for use in a small bathroom, because the space under the toilet is not suitable for development. The user only loses valuable space this way.

Arrangement of a small bathroom - what dimensions should the washbasin have?

Choosing the right washbasin should primarily take into account the adjustment to the individual needs of users. The comfort of using the sanitary facilities will be more important than the aesthetics of the interior. Unfortunately, in the case of small bathrooms, limited arrangement possibilities must be taken into account. The issue of the size of the washbasin will therefore be particularly important.

Contrary to appearances, installing the smallest available models does not have to be the best solution. Washbasins with a width of approx. 35 - 40 cm will take up little space, but will prove to be very inconvenient to use. They will not prevent water from splashing and will make it difficult to perform basic hygiene activities. If you can, choose the 50- or 60-centimeter variant. It will ensure the convenience of using the washbasin and at the same time will not cause any major installation problems.

It is also worth taking into account the height at which the toilet will be installed and the distance allowing for comfortable use. The first value should be approximately 70 - 90 cm. Take this into account when installing a countertop or undercounter washbasin, the height of which depends on where the countertop itself is mounted. The second value must, in turn, allow you to create a strip of free space in front of the toilet, so try to allocate an area of approximately 70 x 100 cm in this place.

Material of the washbasin

When considering which washbasin will work best for a small bathroom, it is also worth taking into account the material of manufacture. Most models available on the market are made of bathroom ceramics. It is characterized by a high level of resistance and ease of cleaning. A cheaper alternative includes acrylic washbasins - resistant to discoloration and scratches, but susceptible to dents.

Less common solutions include glass toilets. They have unquestionable aesthetic values, but require frequent cleaning. Stone and even wooden washbasins also offer great arrangement possibilities, but they will only be found in modern, designer bathrooms.

If you need a small washbasin for a small bathroom, choose a universal solution: ceramic toilets. Other products will work great if you have a bit more space at your disposal.
