Non-contact phase and cable damage indicator – quick diagnostics of installations

The VT1 phase and cable damage indicator by Benning is a practical tool for every electrician and installer, but also for the demanding end-user. It allows for safe and effective detection of voltage without contact and localization of breaks in cables, which significantly facilitates diagnosing problems in electrical installations. The device is particularly useful when checking sockets, distribution boxes, automatic circuit breakers, and cables – both under voltage and those on reels or in light chains.

Functionality and application

VT1 uses capacitive measurement method, which means it does not require current flow through the tested circuit to operate. This increases work safety and allows for diagnosing installations without the risk of damage. Signaling the presence of a phase is done using the red tip of the probe and an audible signal – the higher the voltage, the faster the LED flashes and the higher the sound frequency. This allows the user to receive a clear and readable signal informing about the condition of the installation.

The indicator finds application in many situations:

• Checking the presence of a phase in sockets and distribution boxes.
• Locating breaks in cables (e.g., on cable reels, light chains).
• Diagnostics of cable damage in electrical installations.
• Control of automatic circuit breakers before starting maintenance work.

Construction and parameters

The device is characterized by compact dimensions (152 x 22 x 18 mm) and light weight (40 g), which ensures comfortable work even in hard-to-reach places. The housing made of durable ABS plastic is resistant to cracking, and the IP40 protection class guarantees protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm. The overvoltage category CAT IV 600 V / CAT III 1000 V ensures safe use in various working conditions. The set includes batteries (2 x 1.5 V Micro/AAA/LR03) and a clip for attaching to a pen, which facilitates storage and transport of the device. The device operates in the voltage range from 200 V to 1000 V AC (frequency 45 Hz - 65 Hz).
