Photovoltaic installation protection – Type 2 surge arrester
This surge arrester, designated as Type 2 (Class C), is a key element in protecting photovoltaic installations from the effects of atmospheric and switching surges. The device is designed for mounting on the DC (direct current) side of the PV installation, where the risk of damage caused by lightning strikes is particularly high. Its function is to limit the voltage to a safe level, protecting sensitive components such as inverters and solar panels.
The DS50PVS-1000/G surge arrester is characterized by its high efficiency and the possibility of remote status signaling, which facilitates monitoring of the protection status. Replaceable protective modules allow for quick and economical replacement of damaged elements without the need to replace the entire device.
Construction and operating parameters
The arrester's construction is based on spark gap and varistor technology, providing a fast response to surges. The device has a discharge current Imax of 60kA (8/20µs), which guarantees effective protection even with strong voltage impulses. The DC voltage for which the arrester is designed is 1000V, and the highest continuous operating voltage is 1060V DC. The use of a Y-connection system ensures optimal protection in various installation configurations.
The arrester has a built-in thermal disconnector, which disconnects the device from the circuit in the event of an overload, preventing further damage. Mounting is done on a standard TH35 rail, and the conductor cross-section can range from 2.5 mm² to 35 mm². Additionally, the device is equipped with a mechanical damage indicator (red indicator) and a remote switchable contact for connection to a monitoring system.

The DS50PVS-1000/G surge arrester is used in photovoltaic installations with a power of up to 70A. It complies with the applicable standards: IEC 61643-11, EN 61643-11, EN 50539-11 and UTE C 61-740-51, which confirms its safety and reliability. The use of this type of surge arrester is particularly important in areas prone to frequent lightning strikes or in installations located near power lines.
