Precision press elbow for sanitary and industrial installations
The Geberit Mapress system elbow with a 45° angle and nominal diameter DN 20 (22 mm) is an "arc" type component made of chrome-nickel-molybdenum steel grade 1.4401 (AISI 316), which corresponds to 316 stainless steel. This material contains molybdenum, which increases resistance to pitting corrosion - particularly important in installations exposed to chlorides present in drinking water or certain industrial media.
Both ends of the elbow consist of compression sleeves with a CIIR (chlorobutadiene rubber) seal factory-seated in a groove. The wall thickness at each connection is 1.2 mm, and the sleeve length reaches 32 mm - this is sufficient to ensure stable pipe seating and proper stress distribution at the clamping point. The working length of each connection is 11 mm.
The maximum working pressure at a temperature of 20°C reaches 16 bar, allowing the elbow to be used in typical water supply and central heating installations. The product is designated as a system pipe - this means full compatibility with pipes and other elements of the Geberit Mapress Edelstahl series.
Press connection technique and press indicator function
The elbow is installed using M-type press jaws - the "M" clamping profile is the standard throughout the Mapress system. A key feature is the „unverpresst undicht" function - meaning "unpressed = leaking". As long as the connection is not correctly pressed, the medium will leak through the gap at the seal. This eliminates the risk of a hidden installation error - the installer immediately sees that a given connection still requires tightening.
The factory pressindikator (press indicator) facilitates visual inspection of the completed connection. The sleeve also contains a transparent protective stopping plug, which protects the seal from contamination during transport and storage before installation.
In addition to the leak-tightness conditioned by pressing, the design ensures high tensile strength - which is significant for the mechanical loads of the pipeline.
Scope of media applications and working environments
The elbow is suitable for a wide spectrum of applications:
- Drinking water - cold and hot,
- Water for cooling and heating purposes - both without and with the addition of antifreeze agents,
- System heat (district heating networks) up to 120°C,
- Saturated steam up to 120°C,
- Process and industrial waters, including treated waters,
- Rainwater with pH > 6.0 and grey and black wastewater with pH > 6.0,
- Firefighting water (wet) and sprinkler installations,
- Compressed air of oil cleanliness class 0-3,
- Inert gases (e.g., nitrogen), industrial gases such as acetylene, or welding shielding gases,
- Vacuum.
Additionally, the manufacturer permits use with selected chemicals and technical media - the full list is available in the Geberit technical documentation.
The intended use covers three main areas: building services (haustechnik), industry, and shipbuilding. The Mapress Edelstahl system is therefore a universal solution for installers working on both residential and public utility buildings, as well as industrial or shipyard projects.
Material and corrosion resistance
CrNiMo 1.4401 stainless steel belongs to the group of austenitic chrome-nickel-molybdenum steels. The presence of molybdenum (~2-2.5%) increases resistance to pitting corrosion compared to 304 type steel (1.4301). According to the DIN EN 10088 standard, this steel is classified as a fire-resistant material - fire reaction class A1 according to DIN 4102-1.
The surface finish of the sleeves remains in a raw state (without additional coating), which is a standard solution for press-fit components - a smooth contact surface facilitates proper jaw pressure.
The working pressure of 16 bar at 20°C and the permission to work with saturated steam up to 120°C define the operational limits of this elbow. At higher temperatures, the permissible pressure decreases according to the system characteristics - details are provided in the Geberit technical documentation for the Mapress Edelstahl series.
