System stainless steel pipes for sanitary and heating installations
The Geberit Mapress Edelstahl pipe with an outer diameter of 28 mm and a length of 6 meters is made of CrMoTi 1.4521 type stainless steel (according to EN 10088), commonly referred to as grade 444 ferritic steel. This material contains chromium, molybdenum, and titanium - the latter additive stabilizes the ferritic structure and increases corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures and in environments with variable aggressiveness.
Thermal and structural properties
CrMoTi steel stands out from its austenitic counterparts (e.g., 1.4301 or 1.4401) due to two significant parameters:
- Thermal expansion at just 0.0104 mm/(m·K) - this is approximately half the value typical for austenitic steels. Lower expansion under the influence of temperature means less stress in closed heating circuits and solar installations.
- Pipeline thermal conductivity of 23 W/(m·K) - higher than competing stainless steel grades (which reach approximately 15 W/(m·K)). For central heating installations, this translates to more efficient heat transfer from the pipe wall to the surroundings.
A wall thickness of 1.2 mm with an inner diameter of 25,6 mm ensures a nominal pressure rating of DN25 / PN16. The product is supplied as a six-meter rod with smooth ends - it is not a precision or seamless pipe; the circumferential weld is tested for tightness using the eddy current method.
Scope of applications
The pipe is intended for installation in residential buildings, industrial facilities, and shipbuilding - for both liquid and gaseous media.
Applications for liquid media:
- Cold and hot water - up to 100°C, pressure up to 16 bar.
- Heating water - the working range coincides with hot water.
- Cooling water - without anti-freeze agents up to 100°C, with additives from −30°C to +120°C.
- District heating water - up to 120°C or 140°C at a pressure of 16 bar.
- Saturated steam - up to 155°C at a pressure of 5 bar.
- Heat transfer fluids in solar installations - from −25°C to +220°C, whereby the service life at peak temperatures is limited by the manufacturer's standard.
- Rainwater and grey and black wastewater with pH >6.0.
- Firefighting water (wet and wet-dry) and sprinklers.
- Mineral oils and fuels - the range of permissible applications is specified by the manufacturer.
Applications for gaseous media:
- Compressed air, oil cleanliness class 0-X (according to ISO 8573-1:2010E) - pressure depends on the cleanliness class.
- Vacuum from absolute ≥0.2 bar.
- Inert gases, e.g., nitrogen.
- Natural and liquid gases in pressure class PN5/GT5.
- Biogas - requires separate approval by Geberit.
The pipe end is protected by a green protective cap - this color uniquely identifies CrMoTi steel among the other materials of the Mapress Edelstahl system (CrNiMo steel has a blue cap).
Compliance with standards and durability
The product is covered by a Declaration of Performance (DoP60) issued in accordance with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR):
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Yield strength | 280-400 MPa |
| Tightness | Eddy current testing - passed |
| Reaction to fire | Class A1 |
| Durability | Test according to EN ISO 3651‑2 - passed |
The product standard is EN 10312:2002 + A1:2005. The manufacturer reserves the right to require compliance with national regulations when using the pipe in contact with drinking water.
The pipe is free from substances that interfere with the painting process (LABS-free) - this is important for the potential painting of pipe surfaces visible in technical rooms.
Due to the absence of nickel in the chemical composition, CrMoTi ferritic steel serves as an alternative for installers seeking nickel-free solutions where austenitic grades might raise concerns for users sensitive to this element.
