Welding of PE100 Pipes in Challenging Conditions
This component is a short 90-degree elbow designed for high-density polyethylene (PE100) pipeline systems. Its primary function is to change the flow direction of the medium by 90 degrees while maintaining material structural continuity through butt fusion welding. Thanks to the use of PE100 material in SDR17 class, this component offers sufficient strength for operation in gas installations at working pressure PN5 and water installations up to PN10. Such construction makes it a universal solution, suitable for both natural gas distribution networks and water supply or process installations.
The short bending radius of this elbow allows for space savings in shafts or technical channels, which is crucial in tightly arranged pipeline systems. Unlike long-radius elbows, this model occupies less transverse space, facilitating installation in areas with limited accessibility. Both ends of the component have an outer diameter of 90 mm, ensuring perfect fit with pipes of the same dimension. The joining process is performed via direct butt fusion welding, eliminating the need for additional gaskets or mechanical connectors – the joint becomes an integral part of the pipeline.
Key Features and Practical Application
For the installer, this means simpler and faster installation using standard butt fusion welding machines. There is no risk of leakage due to aging of rubber gaskets, as after proper heating and pressing, the material forms a monolithic whole. PE100 material is characterized by corrosion resistance and resistance to many chemical substances, extending the service life of the entire installation even under difficult soil conditions.
This component is particularly useful in situations requiring:
- Change of pipeline direction by 90 degrees without the need for elbows with additional connectors.
- Installation in gas systems (PN5), where joint tightness and durability are priorities for safety reasons.
- Water supply installations (PN10), where resistance to working pressure and hydraulic fluctuations is required.
- Space savings, thanks to the short elbow construction (total length approximately 145 mm).
It is worth noting that using components of SDR17 class means the ratio of outer diameter to wall thickness equals 17. This implies a thinner wall compared to SDR11 or SDR7 pipes, resulting in a lighter component (approx. 245 g) and easier handling during installation works, while maintaining the required strength for the specified working pressures. This product does not require specialized tools other than a standard butt fusion welding machine adapted for 90 mm diameter. Before welding, clean the end surfaces from dirt and oxides, then perform the heating process according to the welding equipment manufacturer's instructions and standards for PE pipe joining. This ensures the joint achieves full mechanical strength equal to the base pipe material.
