Photovoltaic Installation Protection – gPV Compliant Fuse
The cylindrical gPV-type fuse is designed exclusively for protecting photovoltaic circuits against the effects of short circuits and overloads. This is not a standard fuse; its characteristics and construction are adapted to the specifics of DC in PV systems, where direct voltage and high short-circuit energy require a specialized approach.
The fuse cartridge operates at 1000 V DC, corresponding to the maximum voltages in modern solar installations. The rated current of 12 A allows protection of medium-power module groups, while a breaking capacity of 30 kA ensures effective interruption even of very high-power short circuits – something standard AC fuses cannot withstand.
Construction and Operation
Made of ceramic, the fuse has a stable structure that does not degrade under prolonged direct voltage. Power loss at rated current is 2.6 W – a low value, meaning less heating of the component and higher efficiency in long-term operation. There is no tripping indicator, so the operational status must be checked manually – typical for such components in PV systems.
Dimensions of 10×38 mm are standard for many photovoltaic connector blocks and distribution boards – compatible with most existing enclosures. It does not have C or B characteristics; the manufacturer does not explicitly state them, but in accordance with IEC 60269 standard and gPV designation, it functions as full-range protection – meaning it responds to both overloads and short circuits.
Who Is It For?
For the installer: you do not need to look for an alternative – this is an official Hager component designed for PV systems. It operates in temperatures from -25°C to +70°C, making it suitable for roof mounting in winter as well as on hot days. For the end user: this is a component that prevents fires resulting from module or DC cable failures – not merely “circuit protection” like a standard fuse.
Do not use it in AC circuits. Do not replace it with another type. It is specialized – and that is precisely why it works.
