Protection of the installation against backflow and contamination

The EA-class anti-contamination check valve is a key element protecting the water supply network from secondary contamination. The device prevents water from flowing back from the internal installation into the external network, which is particularly important in locations where there is a risk of contact between potable water and fluids classified in category 2 (e.g., in boiler installations, irrigation systems, or with industrial equipment). Thanks to its EA-type construction, the valve meets the rigorous requirements of standard PN-EN 1717, ensuring the safety of potable water without the need for complex control systems.

Construction and operating principle

The heart of the device is a spring-loaded valve mechanism that reacts to changes in flow direction. When pressure in the installation drops or backflow is attempted, the stainless steel spring immediately moves the disc (poppet) onto the seat, sealing the flow tightly. This process occurs smoothly, eliminating the risk of water hammer – a phenomenon often causing damage to pipes and fittings in traditional check valves.

The housing and connections are made of dezincification-resistant brass (DZR), which is crucial for longevity in a water environment. Sealing is based on ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM), ensuring high tightness even at low backflow pressures (from 3 cm water column). For installation in standard systems, a cylindrical gas internal thread (BSPP-G) with a nominal diameter of 1 1/2 inches is used.

The valve can be mounted in any position – horizontally or vertically – providing great flexibility during installation work. However, it is worth remembering that a horizontal position with the test port facing downwards facilitates later inspections and possible draining of water.

Application and operational parameters

The device is ideal as the main protection at the connection to the water supply network, mounted directly behind the water meter. It is also used in central heating (CH) systems and where short-term pressure surges or large flow fluctuations occur. Thanks to low pressure losses (Kvs value of 38 m³/h), it does not limit the installation's efficiency even with high water consumption.

Under operating conditions, the valve operates at a maximum working pressure of 16 bar (PN 16). The recommended continuous operating temperature ranges from 2 to 65 °C, although the material allows for short-term operation up to 90 °C. The valve begins to pass the medium at a pressure drop of around 50 mbar (0.05 bar), ensuring a quick response to changes in the network. It is intended for potable water, compressed air, and light oil fuels and kerosene (with a limitation on aromatic compound content).

The set includes test caps enabling leak testing without dismantling the entire device. For the 1 1/2-inch diameter model, the total length is approximately 120 mm, and the mass is about 1 kg, facilitating handling during installation.
