This thermal safety valve from Watts is a key element protecting heating systems powered by solid fuels such as coal, pea coal, wood or coke. Its task is to protect against overheating and potential hazards related to the lack of electrical power, which could prevent the circulation pump from operating. Thanks to it, in the event of too high water temperature in the central heating system, water is automatically drained, preventing a dangerous increase in pressure and damage to the boiler.

Construction and operating principle

The STS 20 S valve is a thermostatic device, independent of the pressure in the installation. It operates on the principle of reacting to the temperature of the heating medium at the boiler outlet. A built-in capillary tube with a length of 1.3 meters and a probe placed in a protective sleeve (145 mm) precisely monitors the temperature. When the temperature reaches 97°C (with a tolerance of +/- 2°C), the valve opens, allowing excess heat to be dissipated and preventing the critical temperature of 110°C from being exceeded. An additional button allows for manual water drainage for testing or maintenance.
