Where are chilled water installations used?
Chilled water is necessary to cool the medium (air or water) in various types of installations. It is of great importance, e.g. in air conditioning, industrial installations, medicine and IT (e.g. to reduce the temperature of power supplies and electronic systems). Supplying chilled water to appropriate devices requires an installation adapted for this purpose. What requirements should it meet? Which pipes are best for chilled water installations? What is a chilled water installation?
Chilled water is a cooling medium temperature around 6 degrees. It is widely used in cooling and air conditioning systems. It can be pure water or a mixture with antifreeze additives. It is often an alternative to freon-based refrigerants - primarily due to the reduced negative impact on the environment and a higher level of safety. Chilled water systems are widely used in various industries. They can be found, for example, in the plastics industry, metal processing plants, as well as in the pharmaceutical, food, paper and construction industries.
The central element of the chilled water installation is the chiller, also known as the chiller. This is where the water is cooled to the required temperature. Then, the chilled water is distributed to various cooling receivers using a hydraulic installation composed of appropriately selected components. Cooling receivers are elements in which heat is exchanged from heated media. These may be, for example, traditional air conditioners, coolers or refrigeration devices.

Certain elements are necessary for proper operation of chilled water systems. A model installation of this type includes:
- a unit with chilled water reaches the appropriate temperature;
- steel pipes that can operate at low temperatures and minimize the heating of the water flowing inside;
- fan coil units , in which heat is exchanged (as a result of this process, the chilled water is heated by approx. 5 degrees);
- radiators and condensers cooling heat exchangers;
- pump responsible for the circulation of chilled water within the installation.

An efficiently operating chilled water installation should be constructed of properly selected pipes. These should primarily meet the following requirements:
- pressure resistance up to the operating pressure of the installation;
- resistance to chilled water temperature;
- chemical resistance (an important parameter for installations using cooling water with admixtures);
- diameter ensuring proper flow of the cooling medium;
- minimizing water heating ensuring the efficiency of the chilled water system.
Various types of pipes meet these requirements. They can be made of both plastics (mainly PVC and PP) and metal (especially steel and copper). For the most demanding installations, steel pipes, characterized by greater resistance to high pressure or resistance to extreme temperatures, will be the best choice. Pipes with large diameters will also ensure quick flow of chilled water and effectively prevent its warming.
