Chilled water systems play a key role in cooling various media in various sectors of the economy. However, to ensure the system operates effectively, the chilled water system must meet certain requirements. What are they?

Where are chilled water systems used?
Chilled water is essential for cooling the medium (air or water) in various types of installations. It is of great importance, for example, in air conditioning, industrial installations, medicine and IT (e.g. for lowering the temperature of power supplies and electronic systems). Supplying chilled water to the appropriate devices requires an installation adapted to this purpose. What requirements should it meet? Which pipes work best in chilled water installations? We take a closer look at these issues in the article.
What is a chilled water installation?
Chilled water is a cooling agent
temperature of about 6 degrees. It is widely used in cooling and air conditioning systems. It can be pure water or its mixture with anti-freeze additives. It is often an alternative to refrigerants based on freons - primarily due to the reduced negative impact on the environment and a higher level of safety. Systems using chilled water are widely used in various industries. They can be found, for example, in the plastics industry, metalworking plants, as well as in the pharmaceutical, food, paper and construction industries.
The central element of the chilled water installation is the unit, also known as a chiller. It is in this unit that the water is cooled to the required temperature. Then the chilled water is distributed to various cooling receivers using a hydraulic system built from appropriately selected. Cooling receivers are elements in which heat is exchanged from heated factors. These can be, for example, traditional air conditioners, coolers or refrigeration devices.
Chilled water installation diagram
Chilled water installations require certain elements to function properly. A model installation of this type includes:
- a chiller in which the chilled water
reaches the right temperature; - steel pipes that are able to operate at low temperatures and minimize the heating of the water flowing inside;
- fan coil units , where heat exchange takes place (as a result of this process, chilled water is heated by approx. 5 degrees);
- coolers and condensers cooling heat exchangers;
- a pump responsible for the circulation of chilled water within the installation.
Large Diameter Steel Pipes for Ice Plant Systems
An efficiently functioning chilled water installation should be built with appropriately selected pipes. These should primarily meet the following requirements:
- pressure resistance up to the working pressure of the installation;
- resistance to chilled water temperature;
- chemical resistance (an important parameter in the case of installations using cooling water with admixtures);
- diameter ensuring proper flow of the cooling medium;
- minimizing water heating to ensure the efficiency of the chilled water system.
These requirements are met by various types of pipes. They can be made of both plastics (mainly PVC and PP) and metals (especially steel and copper). In the case of the most demanding installations, the best choice will be steel pipes, which are more resistant to high pressure or extreme temperatures. Large diameter pipes will also ensure a fast flow of chilled water and effectively prevent it from warming up.
KAN-therm Inox offer – "Giga Size" pipes
Efficient and reliable operation of the chilled water installation has a significant impact on the safety and efficiency of the entire plant. Therefore, high-quality components should be used during its construction. In the Onninen wholesaler you will find a wide selection of pipes for this type of installation.
Among them is the KAN-therm Inox system , which is perfect for installations requiring the highest flow rates. As one of the few systems available on the market, it offers pipes of 139.7 and 168.3 millimeters, and the highest quality stainless steel guarantees high durability. The selection of individual elements will be easy and hassle-free thanks to the experts in our installation wholesaler .
