Choose the right size of hoop

Bednarka is one of the most important elements of building grounding. What should you remember when choosing it? What requirements should it meet? We discuss these and other important issues in the new entry.

Construction of foundations

What is a cooperage and what is it used for?

Bednarka is a relatively thin steel tape with a flattened rectangular cross-section. It is used primarily in electrical installations, where it performs important functions, being part of the earth electrode responsible for protection against electric shock, lightning and overvoltage. As such, it greatly affects the safety of the building and its users. The choice of a cooper must therefore be well thought out and dictated by rational reasons.

For customers who have no experience in electrical installations, selecting the right hoop iron may prove to be quite a challenge. The most serious difficulty is the fact that there are many variants of these elements on the market, differing primarily in size and finishing. However, similar problems can be avoided with at least basic knowledge of this issue. In the following paragraphs, we explain what to pay attention to when buying a hoop.

Bednarka 25x4 in earth electrode - regulations

Polish law does not require the installation of an earth electrode, but it is worth installing it for safety reasons. The costs of the entire investment rarely exceed PLN 10,000, which is not a large amount compared to losses caused by overvoltage or lightning strikes. A properly constructed earth electrode also significantly helps protect the life and health of building users.

Investors who decide to install an earth electrode should read the content of the PN-EN 62305-3 standard[4]. It determines, among other things, the minimum length of the earth electrode and the cross-sectional area of the hoop. Following the recommendations contained therein is the best way to select the right hoop and thus create an installation that provides effective protection against threats.

Galvanized steel band 30x3 According to the applicable anti-shock protection standard, the minimum cross-sectional area of stainless steel hoops must be 90 square millimeters with a thickness of 3. In turn, lightning protection standards recommend that the cross-section should have an area of at least 100 square millimeters with a thickness of 2 mm.

However, finding hoops that meet these requirements will not be difficult. The 25x4 millimeter hoops available in Onninen's offer have a cross-sectional area of 100 square millimeters, which allows them to meet the above standards. We also offer our clients:   hoop irons in size 30x4 millimeters and a cross-section of up to 120 square millimeters . Thanks to the large layer of zinc coating (as much as 300 grams per square meter), they are highly resistant to corrosion.

Galvanized and copper-plated hoop

As part of a lightning and surge protection installation, the hoop is located in the ground, usually at a depth exceeding 2 meters. This location makes it exposed to constant, direct contact with moisture contained in the soil and, consequently, corrosion. The affected steel gradually loses its properties, which in extreme cases may lead to the loss of the protection provided by the earth electrode.

Therefore, one of the most important parameters of the hoop iron is its resistance to rusting. To ensure it, various solutions are used. One of them is to make the hoop from stainless steel, which, however, significantly increases the costs of its production and affects the physical properties of the element.

That is why galvanized hoops are widely used - primarily galvanized and copper-plated hoops . Covering the surface of the hoop with a coating of corrosion-resistant metal ensures the durability of the earth electrode for at least a dozen or so years and allows you to enjoy trouble-free operation of the building.

Knowing how important hoop irons are for safety, our store offers only the highest quality products. We offer a wide selection of galvanized hoops produced by the renowned company Tiga-Cynk . The installation wholesaler's staff is also ready to dispel all doubts related to choosing the option that will work best for a given application.
