Solar pump groups are the central points of systems equipped with solar collectors. The pump group is responsible for the flow of the working medium, influencing the proper operation and efficiency of the entire solar installation. It includes a circulation pump and various measuring and protection elements. Do you want to learn more about the solar pump group? We invite you to read the guide prepared by the Onninen team.

What should the flow be in the solar pump group?
The solar pump group is responsible for transporting heat in solar installations. It connects solar collectors with water heaters. The heat received from the solar collector must be cooled, which ensures the flow of glycol. The working temperature of glycol is higher than that of water, so the pump elements must be made of materials with increased durability.
The glycol flow rate depends on the parameters of the selected pump set, and these should correspond to the size of the solar installation. Manufacturers usually specify the flow rate a given pump group is intended for. It is generally assumed that the flow should be 0.5-1.6 l/min. for one collector. In the case of a larger number of collectors, appropriate conversion factors are used. The solution can also be selected depending on the surface of the solar collectors.
Sounds complicated? Don't worry, by entrusting the design and connection of a solar installation to a professional installation company, you will not have to worry about selecting the flow in the pump group, the minimum capacity of the expansion vessel or the pipe diameters. The investment will be implemented comprehensively.
When is it worth choosing a two-way solar pump group?
Solar pump groups can be divided into two main types:
- one-way solar groups - their design is compact, compact and easy to install, they are mounted near the water heater on the return pipe;
- two-way solar groups - also called double, are highly efficient, but more demanding in installation (mainly due to installation on the supply and return cables) and extensive, equipped with, among others, with supply and return thermometers, flow meter and air separator.
The efficient, two-way (double) solar pump group offers very wide compatibility. It can work with most solar systems in large houses, e.g. two- and three-story houses. It will work well in domestic water and swimming pool heating installations.
What pressure should be in the solar installation?
The optimal pressure is from 1 to 4 bar. The pressure status can be read on the manometer located in the body of the solar pump group. It is worth mentioning here that, in addition to the basic function of forcing the flow of glycol, the solar pump group affects the safety of the entire solar installation. It has a safety valve and a connector for connecting the expansion tank (vessel).
This is protection against excessive pressure increase. When the pressure increases to the maximum allowable limit, the safety valve opens, preventing damage to the installation. When choosing a solar pump group, in the technical parameters of the product, pay attention to the "safety group" item, e.g. safety group with a safety valve with an opening pressure of X bar.
