In which rooms is a surface-mounted electrical installation suitable?
Surface-mounted installations are based on elements mounted on the walls, which on the one hand facilitates assembly and disassembly, modifications and maintenance and repair work, but on the other hand significantly affects the aesthetics of the interior. In modern construction, they are much less common than concealed ones. They do not require grooves.
Cables are laid in various types of ducts and conduits or attached to the substrate using special holders. Surface-mounted installation is used in industrial premises and wherever, for various reasons, it is not possible to run the installation under the plaster, e.g. in historic buildings, wooden buildings or metal structures.
In addition, surface-mounted installations can often be found in places with a purely utilitarian function, such as a basement, garage, utility room, allotment, etc. It should be remembered that the cables in surface-mounted installations may be more exposed to moisture and mechanical damage, and therefore require protection appropriate to the conditions.
When is a concealed electrical installation a better solution?
The aesthetic and safety aspects are the main reasons for installing a concealed installation. In concealed installations, all elements, except for sockets and switches, are hidden in the walls of the building (under the plaster), which is of key importance for many investors.
The arrangement does not suffer from visible cables and wires. Flush-mounted installations are standard in modern houses and apartments. Building in the cabling is a better (safer) solution when there are children or animals in the building. It helps prevent accidents. Flush-mounted installations are also more effectively protected against mechanical damage.
A cable running in a wall, ceiling or floor can be additionally protected by an electrical conduit of a specified strength (cables are often run in special tubes, i.e. conduits). Investors' concerns mainly concern the laborious and expensive installation of the installation and the troublesome removal of any damage, because hiding the wiring in the walls requires chiseling them out in the event of problems. Fortunately, a properly executed electrical installation, based on high-quality components, is generally failure-free and long-lasting.
In addition, experienced electrical designers and contractors are able to advise their clients which system elements can be freely built in and which will be safer to run in skirting boards. This procedure means that the cables are effectively hidden but remain easily accessible, so any repairs become much less laborious.
Which electrical installation will be cheaper - flush-mounted or surface-mounted?
Surface-mounted installations are almost always cheaper to install, because they do not require deep wall chases, which require a concrete chaser , and then bricking up the pipes in the plaster, as is the case with concealed installations. When damage occurs to the sections hidden in the wall, it is often necessary to break down the wall, which usually involves the services of a specialist, the use of professional tools, and (re)finishing work. On the other hand, as mentioned earlier, modern concealed installations are highly reliable and damage to concealed pipes is extremely rare.
