A manhole, or cover, is an important part of every septic tank. There are covers made of various materials available on the market. You can choose from cast iron, concrete and plastic manholes. Find out what a septic tank manhole is used for and check which cover to choose for your tank.

Why a cesspool manhole?
Each cesspool has an inlet, which should be covered with a special cover to ensure the safety of pedestrian and car traffic . The strength of such a manhole often allows for the free passage of trucks and agricultural machinery. Thanks to this, there is no need to specially fence or exclude the area with the cesspool from traffic. A manhole also requires the use of a manhole.
However, the hatch does not only have a safety function. The product provides quick and easy access to the interior of the septic tank, e.g. for cleaning, repairs or inspection. To look inside, simply lift and slide the cover. Of course, the entire structure is designed in such a way that small children cannot handle opening the hatch.
Another role of a septic tank cover is to prevent unpleasant odors from escaping from the tank. A properly fitted hatch guarantees perfect tightness. The protection also works the other way around – rainwater, soil, sand or other impurities that could cause the septic tank to fill up too quickly do not get inside.
Types of septic tank hatches
Covers are available in various versions. The difference between the individual models lies primarily in the base material. You can choose from covers made of cast iron, concrete and plastic. Below we briefly describe the advantages and disadvantages of each of these solutions.
Cast iron septic tank covers offer maximum durability, resistance to loads of up to several tons and very high resistance to weather conditions. They are an aesthetic and solid alternative to popular concrete covers. A cast iron manhole has basically only two disadvantages: significant weight, which makes it difficult to operate by one person, and a relatively high price.
Concrete septic tank hatches , thanks to their relatively low weight and low price, are quite popular. However, the concrete cover raises serious concerns regarding the effectiveness of access protection (it is quite easy to lift), resistance to loads of over 0.5 tons and resistance to weather conditions.
Plastic septic tank covers are a modern, light and cheap alternative to cast iron and concrete models. Despite their low weight, they have a similar load-bearing capacity to cast iron manholes. Made of high-quality plastics (PVC, PP, PE), they are characterized by increased resistance to mechanical damage and atmospheric factors. The plastic cover does not rust, does not require impregnation, is easy to install and use and has an elegant design. Its surface often has anti-slip properties.
In terms of shape, we can distinguish between square and round manholes .
What to consider when choosing a septic tank hatch?
The choice of a septic tank cover depends on the parameters of the specific tank and the factors to which the cover will be exposed at the place of use. First of all, you should pay attention to the load class of the product. For example, an A15 cover , i.e. with a load class of A-15, can be used in pedestrian and bicycle traffic routes and in green areas, including driveways. When choosing a septic tank cover, it is also worth taking a look at the durability, ease of installation and operation, and - if it matters to you - aesthetic values.
