Everything you need to know about power sockets

Added: Tuesday, 10/17/2023

Power equipment (also known as three-phase) is standardly used in industrial plants. It enables efficient and safe operation of powerful devices and machines in difficult conditions. Increasingly, household appliances requiring higher power, such as electric cookers, are also connected to three-phase current. Power equipment includes power sockets, power plugs, quick connectors, cam switches and other accessories. Find out what a power socket is, what it is used for, what types of power sockets there are and which variant to choose.

What is a power socket?

Power socket PCE 16A 400V 3P+Z+N, socket 230V IP44 In an industrial facility or residential building, there may be a single-phase installation and/or a three-phase installation, commonly called "power". Single-phase receivers are powered from the first phase with a voltage of 230V. On the other hand, energy-intensive three-phase receivers, requiring a voltage of 400V, are powered from the third phase. Connection to three phases allows much more energy to be sent to receivers - over 6kW. Additionally, a modern three-phase installation provides up to 5 AC circuits. In order to power a machine, the power of which is much higher than standard devices, effectively, safely and at all possible, special three-phase equipment is necessary. It consists of various accessories, including power sockets (also known as three-phase sockets).

What is the use of a power socket?

The power socket provides access to three-phase current with a power of up to 400V, which is something that single-phase equipment would not be able to provide. It can have a design designed for 4- or 5-wire power supply. Appropriate power plugs are used for sockets, allowing full use of power. Power equipment is characterized by an increased tightness class. The degree of protection is at least IP44, sometimes IP54 or even IP67, which allows the socket to be used in very dusty, dusty and damp places.

Socket PCE 16A 3P+Z+N 400V IP44 Power sockets are used daily by professionals: large companies, manufacturing plants, farms and car repair shops. Home users also increasingly have access to three-phase electrical installations. For example, an induction hob and many other devices with higher power consumption can be connected to the power - in an apartment, house, garage, garden, under a carport, etc. It is worth knowing that electric cars are charged using a three-phase socket.

The use of power sockets is determined by several factors. One of the most important is the IEC rated current. This parameter informs about the current loads supported, so before buying a given socket, it is necessary to check this value and compare it with the requirements of the device you want to connect to the installation. On the market, you will find power sockets such as:

Which power socket should I choose: fixed or portable?

There are different types of power sockets. Depending on their purpose and method of installation, they are distinguished by:

  • Onnline power socket 32A 5p + 230V power panel sockets (for power switchboards ), which allow many energy-intensive devices and machines to be connected to the power without excessively loading the installation, hence they are most often found on construction sites and in large manufacturing plants;
  • portable power sockets, which are used for easy, quick and stable connection of various types of three-phase devices and creation of extension cords in industrial plants, workshops, farms and homes;
  • fixed power sockets, designed for permanent mounting on/in the wall, commonly used in industrial plants, service companies, car workshops, production and sports halls.

Among the fixed sockets, you can find a flush-mounted power socket and a surface-mounted power socket. The former in particular ensures discreet installation and an aesthetic finish to the electrical installation.

The choice of the type of power socket should be adapted to the purpose, working conditions and preferred method of installation. It is necessary to have specialist knowledge, so it is best to discuss this issue with a qualified electrician.
