How does a heating mat work?
A heating mat is one of the types of heat sources in underfloor heating systems. It has the form of a self-adhesive fiberglass mesh on which tungsten electric wires are mounted. Under the influence of the energy flowing through them, the wires heat up and give off heat to the environment. Due to the need to ensure the flow of electricity, the mat should not be cut - this would involve cutting the wires. The mat should therefore be selected to the size of the room.
The construction of the wires is crucial for the operation of the heating mat. In order for them to effectively release heat to the environment, they must be multi-wire braided. Manufacturers also use Teflon insulation, which prevents local overheating and increases the durability of the mat. A screen made of tinned copper wires is also used for the same purpose.
In what situations is it worth installing a heating mat?
The heating mat is an effective source of heat. It will also work well in rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms or hallways, where ceramic tiles, stone or panels that reduce heating efficiency are often used. It can be used both as a supplement to traditional heating systems and as the main source of heat. Depending on the model, the mat can be used outdoors or indoors.
Its low profile, which raises the floor level only slightly, allows it to be used not only at the construction stage of the house, but also during renovation. Economic considerations also speak in favor of choosing a heating mat. High thermal efficiency makes its use very cheap and environmentally friendly.
The diameter of the cable is only a few millimeters, which makes the entire mat very thin. Thanks to this, it can also be used where every centimetre of the height of the room is important. The glass fibres on which the cables are mounted are also characterized by high flexibility and low susceptibility to deformation, which significantly facilitates the installation of the mat.
How much electricity does a heating mat use?
Compared to other systems, the heating mat uses a relatively small amount of electricity. The exact amount of electricity used depends on several factors – primarily the power of the mat, operating time and the expected temperature and temperature in the room. For example – heating mats with a power of 100W/m2 use about 100 watts per square meter, which is comparable to a 100 watt light bulb. This means that in a room with an area of 10 m2, a heating mat with this power will need about 1000 watts per hour of operation.
In practice, heating mats often work only for a short period to heat the floor to the desired temperature and then maintain it at a constant level. This allows for a significant reduction in energy consumption. Trouble-free installation (easy unrolling and the presence of a self-adhesive layer) in turn allows for minimizing the workload of the installation team, which is associated with additional savings for the investor.
