Underfloor cooling is an innovative solution, increasingly chosen as an alternative to air conditioning. Why is this happening? What are the advantages of underfloor cooling over traditional technologies?
Underfloor heating is useful not only in winter and autumn. You can also benefit from its installation on warm days. This will be possible with an underfloor cooling system that uses the same installation. Cooling rooms with underfloor heating is a convenient and efficient way to regulate the temperature in various weather conditions. What is worth knowing about this solution? How does an underfloor cooling system work? What are its advantages and disadvantages? We explain these issues in a new entry.
Can underfloor heating cool?
Underfloor cooling, also known as surface cooling, is an effective method of cooling rooms using a water underfloor heating system. Thanks to the use of a heat pump or special cooling devices, the floor is cooled by circulating water, ensuring thermal comfort even on hot days. An underfloor cooling system can therefore be an attractive alternative to air conditioning.

How does an underfloor cooling system work?
The operation of underfloor cooling is based on the circulation of water in a closed system located under the floor surface. There are two main ways to cool underfloor heating: with or without a heat pump.
In the first case, the pump can operate actively, i.e. pump heat in the opposite direction than in the heating mode, or be turned off, with cooling taking place through water from the lower heat source. As for cooling without a heat pump, cold water is supplied to the underfloor heating system, which can come from underground deposits or be cooled using dedicated equipment.
Advantages and disadvantages of underfloor cooling
Underfloor cooling is a solution that eliminates the phenomenon of cold air and problems resulting from the presence of microorganisms in ventilation ducts. This makes it healthier and more comfortable than traditional air cooling. They will be appreciated primarily by allergy sufferers and people with reduced immunity who often cannot stay in air-conditioned rooms. In addition, it is worth choosing underfloor cooling because of:
no need to use external units as in the case of air conditioning;
possibility of use in buildings of various structures.
On the other hand, however, there are systems of this type that have some drawbacks. These include primarily:
uneven distribution of cold (the coldest places are right next to the floor);
risk of moisture condensing on a cold floor;
the need to use complex control systems;
higher installation cost compared to traditional cooling methods;
the need to plan installation at the design or reconstruction stage of the house.
Despite these limitations, underfloor cooling is a modern and effective solution. If you are looking for a technology that will provide comfortable conditions in hot weather and at the same time be safe in terms of health, it is worth taking a closer look at it.
