What is a gas connection and what application should I submit before installation?

Gas is necessary for cooking, it allows you to provide hot water and heat your house or apartment. However, first you need to ensure proper installation and connection. What is that?

A gas connection is, according to the definition contained in the regulation, "a section of the gas pipeline network supplying the shut-off fittings used to connect devices or installations of the connected entity to the gas network."

To make a gas connection, you must follow the regulations set by the legislator. First, you must submit an appropriate application to the gas company, which specifies the technical conditions for making a connection in a specific location. At this stage, the knowledge that the applicant should have concerns the classification of entities seeking to determine the connection conditions. This division includes:

  • group A includes entities in which the gas installation will be connected to the gas network (industrial or distribution) directly, the gas pressure here is high,
  • group B are entities that apply for a connection to a network other than that mentioned in group A and that do not require the supply of high-methane natural gas or propane-butane in an amount not exceeding 10m3/h, or nitrogen-rich natural gas in an amount not exceeding 25m3/h,
  • group C applies to all entities involved in the transmission and distribution of gas fuels, including their processing, extraction or storage.

In most cases, especially if planning to build a single-family house, the applicant will be classified as a group B recipient.

Gas installation in the house

Gas installation in a single-family house is performed when all necessary permits have been issued. Due to the risk posed by natural gas, it must be performed by professionals with appropriate qualifications. Selecting the right elements, assembling and operating the installation is the basis for safety, so it is worth investing in good quality components for the network and gas connection.

In single-family houses, highly flexible polyethylene pipes with a diameter of DN32 are most often used to connect gas . They are located approximately 1 m below the ground surface. The gas is supplied to the so-called box, which is always located outside the building. The box contains, of course, a gas meter and a special reducer that allows you to limit the network gas pressure to below 5 kPa, as this is a sufficient value for home appliances. For safety reasons, there is also a main valve in the box.

Gas installation in the company

Not only single-family houses, but also company buildings can be equipped with a gas connection. As in the case of houses, it is necessary to obtain appropriate permits, prepare a design, etc. companies for which the installation is necessary in connection with their business activities may apply for special connection conditions and an increase in the gas pressure supplied to the interior of the building.

What regulations govern connection to the gas network?

Gas installation in a single- or multi-family house, as well as in companies and industrial facilities is a very complex process, strictly regulated by law. Detailed regulations have been developed to ensure the safety of both the building's residents and everyone in the vicinity.

The installation of a gas connection in the building is based on a set of procedures regulated by the Regulation of the Minister of Economy on special conditions for the operation of the gas system of July 2, 2010.

In practice, applying for a gas connection is a multi-stage process, starting with obtaining specific permits.

When submitting an application for a connection, it should include certain information, such as: information about the applicant, planned date of commencement of gas collection, estimated annual demand for natural gas, as well as connection capacity. When submitting your application, please remember to include all required attachments, including:

  • a statement that the applicant has the legal title to use the facility for which the gas connection is to be made,
  • development plan or site sketch prepared for the building in relation to the existing gas network, taking into account neighboring buildings,
  • a copy of the plot development plan, which will be made on a copy of the basic map or on a copy of a unit map located in the state geodetic and cartographic resources, it is important that the connected devices and installations are located here,
  • development plan or site sketch showing the location of the facility.

For customers classified in group B, the gas company has only 21 days to respond to the submitted application, while in group A it is 45 days, and in group C, as much as 60 days.
