Ground source heat pump with or without a tank?

Added: Wednesday, 6/9/2021

Maxima or Maxima Compact – what determines the choice? Which pump is better for single-family homes and which for larger facilities? Does the choice depend only on the size of the building? All this is presented in the guide below by Julia Sobaszek - National Advisor for Galmet Heat Pumps. We discuss the issue of selecting the type and model of the Maxima ground heat pump , highly rated by European experts and customers and manufactured in Poland.

Ground source heat pump with or without a tank

The models of this heat pump are divided into two basic series: Maxima and Maxima Compact . They have many common features and solutions. Both Maxima and Maxima Compact are ground heat pumps operating with a ground source in the form of a glycol exchanger. Both models will perfectly heat rooms and provide hot water. These are modern, ecological devices that we can remotely control and control their operating parameters, e.g. via an application. They also have very similar refrigeration systems.

What distinguishes Maxima from Maxima Compact?

The main difference between them is that Maxima Compact heat pumps have an integrated hot water tank made of stainless steel built into the body. For Maxima models, an appropriate hot water tank must be selected and installed separately. Galmet's offer includes hot water exchangers designed to work with heat pumps, including: Maxi, Complete or Tower Grand.

What should you know about Maxima and Maxima Compact heat pumps before making your choice? What buildings are they intended for and which one will work better in them?

Ground source heat pump with or without a tank The first type series – Maxima – is very wide and includes 8 models. The smallest units have 7.25 kW (7 GT), and the most powerful 41.3 kW (42 GT) - for the B0W35 operating point. The wide power range of the series allows for the operation of buildings with an area of up to 800 m2, with a heat demand of approx. 50 W/m2. In addition, the 20-42 GT models are high-temperature heat pumps that reach an outlet temperature of 65°C. This is possible thanks to the use of a special type of compressor with EVI technology. This technology allows you to maintain high heating power as the temperature of the upper source increases. Maxima heat pumps have circulation pumps as standard, which in models up to 16 GT are built into the device, while for models from 20 GT they are delivered complete with the device, but installed in the installation apart from the heat pump unit itself. The situation is similar with the three-way switching valve for domestic hot water - in models 7-16 GT it is already built into the device, while for models 20-42 GT it is optional equipment and is installed in the installation.

What buildings are Maxima Compact pumps best for?

The Maxima Compact pump range includes three models: 7, 10 and 12 GT, which corresponds to power from 7.25 to 12.5 kW (for operating point B0W35). The power range allows for effective heating of buildings with an area of up to 240 m2, assuming a heat demand of 50 W/m2. Maxima Compact heat pumps have a tank with a coil built into one housing with the heat pump. It is a 316L stainless steel tank that allows you to obtain approximately 200 liters of mixed water at a temperature of 40°C. It is therefore intended for installations where hot water will be used by up to 4 people, assuming a consumption of 50 l/person. Of course, Maxima Compact heat pumps also include circulation pumps and a three-way switching valve.

What are the functional advantages of these heat pump models that installers primarily pay attention to?

Galmet Maxima Compact heat pump The main advantage of Maxima Compact is the compactness of the solution. We install only one small device with an already built-in tank. This means significant savings in space needed for installation elements. This device is perfect for buildings with a heating power requirement of up to 12.5 kW. Maxima Compact is unrivaled if the demand for hot water in the building is around 200 l/day. It is perfect for installations where the heat pump is the only source of heat for water heating. If the demand for domestic hot water is higher, a Maxima heat pump should be used in combination with a Maxi tank - 250-1000 l. Undoubtedly, Maxima will also be a better solution where there is no consumption of domestic hot water. Its advantage is the wide range of applications in various systems. It can only work as a source of room heating, then an external hot water tank will be unnecessary. The Maxima series covers a larger power range, so it allows you to handle the heat supply of larger facilities. Maxima should also be used in installations where an additional source for heating domestic water is provided - it can be connected to a bivalent tank (with two coils).
