Heat pump and heat recovery – is it worth it?

Added: Friday, 5/6/2022

Heat pumps are becoming more and more popular among entrepreneurs who are looking for effective ways to reduce heating bills. These modern heating devices allow you to limit your expenses to relatively low electricity bills. The savings will be greater the lower the building's heat demand. The use of ventilation with heat recovery can be used to reduce this parameter. Discover the most important benefits of combining both of these solutions!

Is a heat pump and heat recovery profitable?

From this article you will learn:

  • why is it worth combining a heat pump with heat recovery,
  • how much can you save on a heat pump with heat recovery,
  • what to consider when installing a heat pump with heat recovery.

Combining a heat pump with a recuperator – what are the benefits?

A heat pump is a device used for heating rooms and preparing hot water, using renewable energy sources. It obtains heat from the air, ground or water, and requires only relatively small amounts of electricity to operate. As a result, it contributes to a significant reduction in expenses and reduction of exhaust emissions. Both of these benefits should be of particular interest to those striving to run a profitable and socially responsible business.

However, it is worth remembering that heat pumps work best in modern buildings with low heat demand. The better the insulation, the less heating power the pump needs. This in turn reduces investment and operating costs. If you decide to install such a heating installation in your company, make sure to minimize heat losses. A mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery will prove invaluable in this case.

Recuperation allows you to recover some of the heat losses generated by the ventilation system. This process involves transferring thermal energy from the exhaust air to the supply air. Thanks to this, fresh air at a pre-prepared temperature enters the building.

It is best to decide to combine a heat pump with mechanical ventilation at the investment planning stage. This will allow for even further savings, manifested by:

  • selecting radiators with lower power or reducing the number of surface heating loops,
  • resignation from the construction of building elements such as exhaust or ventilation chimney, boiler room, fuel storage room, etc.,
  • installation of a heat pump with lower heating power.

To sum up, the use of heat recovery translates into lower heat demand for the building. This, in turn, allows the investor to save on the purchase of a heat pump and additional elements of the heating system.

What exactly are the benefits for an entrepreneur when combining a heat pump with a recuperator?

  • Reduction of electricity consumption (even by several dozen percent).
  • Reducing investment costs.
  • Greater efficiency of the heating system.
  • Minimization of service and maintenance costs.
  • Improving the quality and efficiency of room ventilation.
  • Eliminating the problem of exhaust emissions into the atmosphere.
  • Improving air quality, and therefore the health and well-being of employees.
  • Eliminating unpleasant odors.
  • Possibility of ionizing the supplied air.
  • Effective and energy-saving all year round.
  • Easier to maintain appropriate humidity and air flow

Pump and ventilation with heat recovery – how much can you save?

Is a heat pump and heat recovery profitable?

Traditional gravity ventilation is responsible for the greatest heat loss - 30 to 60%. Replacing it with a mechanical system with heat recovery allows you to eliminate this problem and reduce the building's heat demand, which is calculated at the stage of its design or modernization. The difference is approximately 45% in favor of the facility with mechanical ventilation and reduces energy demand by up to 20 kWh/m2 per year. This, in turn, allows you to reduce expenses for the purchase of a heat pump and its operation. Their height depends primarily on the size of the facility and the type of device.

By choosing an air heat pump with recuperation, you save on, among others:

  • purchasing a smaller device,
  • smaller distributors,
  • fewer heating loops,
  • shorter wells,
  • lower heat demand,
  • less automation.

In an example building with an area of 240 m 2, you will spend on average PLN 6,850 less on the investment in an air heat pump than in the case of a system without heat recovery.

However, if you decide on a ground heat pump with a vertical collector and combine it with heat recovery, you save not only on the above-mentioned investment elements, but also on the possibility of making shorter drillings.

In the case of the above-mentioned building with an area of 240 m 2 , on average PLN 10,400 remains in your pocket. However, this amount should also include savings of approximately PLN 7,500 resulting from 10 years of operation of a device with lower power and the associated lower energy consumption. It is worth noting that the latter value may increase significantly in the following years due to increases in electricity prices.

Heating system with a heat pump and heat recovery – what should be taken into account?

When planning to heat a building with a heat pump and install a recuperator in your company, you must make the selection of both devices dependent on the specificity of the facility. For this purpose, you should first focus on mechanical ventilation, and only after calculating the energy demand - on the heating system.

When choosing a recuperator, pay attention primarily to the building surface and the so-called air exchange rate in specific rooms. The latter value is usually expressed in cubic meters per hour. It depends on the function of a given facility and the number of people using it. When making decisions, also keep in mind that the higher the efficiency of the recuperator, the greater the electricity consumption.

Only by taking into account heat recovery through recuperation can you correctly determine the building's energy demand. It is the main criterion for selecting a heat pump. This value is expressed in watts per square meter, so it should be multiplied by the surface of the heated object. It is also worth taking into account the electrical power that the device needs to operate. The lower it is, the cheaper the pump will be to operate. By comparing both of these values, you will learn the COP coefficient that defines the energy efficiency and efficiency of the device. A good heat pump is one with the highest COP index.

It is worth remembering that without these two solutions it will be difficult to meet the so-called Technical Conditions for New Buildings (Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure on the technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location).
