PE pipes made of polyethylene are commonly used in hydraulic works, especially during the construction of piping. Polyethylene as a reliable plastic with excellent properties - flexibility, lightness, ease of installation - works perfectly here. There is also no problem in creating very long and complex transmission networks using polyethylene pipes in other cases, for example in gas pressure installations. However, to make this possible, special electrofusion fittings are needed. Thanks to them, connecting sewage pipes or pipes in gas networks is not difficult at all. It is worth getting to know them better!

What are electrofusion fittings?
Electrofusion fittings, such as electrofusion elbows, are a type of connector that is used to connect pipes in various transmission systems, such as gas or water installations. Similar to PE pipes, fittings are also made of the same material - PE, i.e. polyethylene. It has excellent properties, characterized by resistance to corrosion and mechanical damage. PE electrofusion fittings are primarily PE elbows, PE sleeves and PE tees. All of them are of great importance in the entire structure, ensuring a wide range of applications due to their ideal properties, such as durability and ease of installation.
-
PE elbows allow you to change the direction of transmission, for example gas in pipelines. Such connections are very tight, safe and easy to install, which means that the risk of leakage is reduced to a minimum; - PE sleeves enable the connection of pipes of the same diameter. They are characterized by high resistance to pressure and temperature, but also to mechanical damage. It is no coincidence that they are used to build long-lasting, safe gas and water networks.
- Electrofusion tees are reliable in the event of a transmission line bifurcation, thanks to which the pipeline can be concentrated in three different directions. Like the previous elements, they are perfectly designed, and therefore resistant to damage. They provide excellent tightness.
When is it worth choosing fittings and electrofusion welding?
As we can see, PE fittings can have different shapes, which makes them easy to use for many different tasks. However, when is an electrofusion fitting particularly useful? This is the case when we have two straight pipe sections to connect, for which we need to use couplings - sleeves equipped with built-in heating elements.
This type of welding is necessary in many situations. Electrofusion welders (especially compared to butt welders) are small, and the welding process itself allows very precise measuring of pipeline sections between devices. This means that this type of welding is especially useful where another type of welding - butt welding - cannot take place due to limited space. It is therefore an excellent alternative in places where reliable connections must be created.
How to weld PE pipes correctly? Electrofusion welding
Electrofusion welding is a method of connecting polyethylene pipes using special fittings with built-in heating elements. We will now learn how to properly weld pipes using this method.
-
It is very important that the pipes are cut properly - at right angles, and cleaned with a scraper. - Then we remove the oxidized layer of polyethylene at the welding point. We need to measure it so that it is done at the right length.
- The special electrofusion connector is equipped with appropriate long zones - cold outside and inside the wire, so they must be measured at a specific location. And precisely from the edge of the pipe to scraping.
- Such electrofusion reduction has of course its continuation. Next, we should degrease the scraped pipe with tissues. The electrofusion fitting can be treated in the same way.
- We connect it to the pipe. All elements must be dry.
- Now we can start welding. We turn on the welder and connect its ends, then we take out the mini scanner to scan the code. Thanks to this, we can read all the information about the fitting on the device's display. You can always enter these parameters manually.
- Now all you need to do is confirm your chosen settings so that the welding process can begin.
