There is no need to convince anyone that smog has a negative impact on health. As research results show [1] , every year smog contributes to 43 thousand premature deaths and costs the Polish economy billions of zlotys. As many as 40% of Poles assess the air quality as bad or very bad. Special applications, weather forecasts and boards inform about the concentration of harmful dust on a given day. The ecological awareness of society is still growing. More and more people want to actively fight smog, starting from "their own backyard". We present effective ways for clean air in homes and companies.

Does smog get into the apartment?
Yes, smog gets into the interior through windows and doors and the ventilation system. Its level is highest during the heating season. Outdated furnaces in households are the main cause of air pollution in Poland. That is why it is so important to replace heat sources with modern, efficient and pro-ecological heating devices, such as heat pumps.
However, suspended dust, which travels into home and business premises from the environment, is also a by-product of industrial, energy and transport processes. In addition to outdoor pollution, indoor air quality is reduced by the behavior and choices of building users, such as smoking, large amounts of textiles and artificial materials, renovation work, infrequent cleaning, improper ventilation or overuse of chemicals. These factors are also responsible for unpleasant odors.
How to check the smog level at home?
Special air quality sensors allow for quick measurement of smog in a home, apartment or office. There are devices with different levels of advancement to choose from. The simplest models provide measurement of suspended dust concentration (PM2.5), the main component of smog. More advanced versions will also show us the levels of other dust fractions, such as PM1 and PM10, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde and/or carbon dioxide. Such a sensor may additionally have a function of measuring air temperature and humidity.
How to clean the air from smog?
The simplest, proven method of combating smog in home and business interiors is to invest in air purifiers. A high-quality, properly selected air purifier will neutralize smog and unpleasant odors and purify the air of microorganisms that are dangerous to health. Models differ in terms of, among other things, the range of serviced surface and the type of filters used (HEPA, activated carbon). Air purifiers often have practical functions, such as an air quality sensor or automatic start after detecting exceeded standards. When buying a device, it is worth paying attention to the filter class, which determines the efficiency of air purification.

How to protect yourself against smog?
First of all, you should monitor the air quality, e.g. in a selected mobile smog application, and follow the RCB alerts that arrive in the form of text messages. During periods of increased air pollution, avoid outdoor activities and airing the interiors. Plan short, intensive airing for the morning hours. We will take a look at our heating system. Let's ask local governments about available programs for replacing heat sources. An efficient and effective ventilation system equipped with appropriate anti-smog filters is very important for the quality of air in interiors. If we do not plan to modernize the ventilation system, a non-invasive solution is ductless ventilation. It includes air purifiers, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Let's not forget about regular checks of the condition of seals in window and door joinery. Smog particles enter the rooms through leaks. Some species of potted plants also play their part in anti-smog protection.
