Appropriate preparation of the area for the tiller
Manual loosening of the soil in the garden and digging at a shallow depth is possible using the commonly known spade. However, in difficult conditions, when the size of the working surface is large, the ground is very hard and the tasks are very complicated, special machines are used - combustion, electric and manual tillers. A modern garden tiller definitely makes work in gardens easier and faster. It is not only used to aerate the soil.
A rototiller is a specialized device used in various gardening and allotment works. It is perfect for leveling the ground and loosening the soil so that the planted plants can grow healthily. Before using the equipment, ensure proper preparation of the substrate. Regardless of whether you are getting ready to lay a lawn or intend to carry out other types of garden work, the first step is always cleaning.
The substrate must be thoroughly cleaned of all garbage, stones, branches and weeds. Then you need to carefully dig out the plants that are intended to be placed in another part of the garden. In the case of highly weeded land, it is worth considering spraying. In wet areas, it is very important to drain the ground in advance by creating drainage. Only then can the area be dug up with a spade or a tiller.
What is better for the garden: a tiller or a cultivator?
The tiller allows you to dig, level and loosen the soil. The device is equipped with special blades that rotate on discs. The rotational movement cuts through the ground. Without wasting much time or energy, you get a perfectly flat surface without lumps and gaps. The machine is also useful for removing weeds and spreading fertilizers. Thanks to the availability of various dedicated accessories, you can cleverly expand the functionality of your tiller to use the equipment in an additional role, e.g. as a mower or snow blower.
A cultivator (also known as a tillage aerator) also allows you to loosen the soil. It is equipped with characteristic teeth that dig deep, mix the soil, level it and remove weeds. Like a tiller, a cultivator is suitable for aerating lawns, spreading fertilizer or removing weeds. The first difference between the devices lies in the high power of the cultivator engine, and the second - in principle, in operation. The cultivator does not turn the soil. It often leaves lumps and air gaps. It is widely used in agriculture, where high engine power, significant working depth and maximum efficiency are required, and obtaining a smooth surface is not a priority.
In the case of home gardens, a tiller is a better choice. After using it, the soil is loosened and smooth, optimally prepared for sowing.
Is it worth investing in a powered tiller?
The key issue to consider when choosing a tiller is the drive. Every tiller has a drive! It can be manual, electric or combustion. The type of drive should be adapted to the size of the garden and the nature, frequency and intensity of the planned work. The manual tiller is simply powered by the operator's arms. Manual models are compact, economical and environmentally friendly. They work well on loose substrates, small gardens and flower beds.
Their advantage is also mobility. They are easy to carry and store. However, they can be cumbersome to use. You have to use force to make them move forward. For larger areas and long-term work, it is worth investing in a self-propelled machine. An electric or combustion tiller will make loosening the soil and smoothing the earth much easier, more convenient and faster.
The difference between an electric and combustion tiller
A petrol tiller needs fuel to operate. It can cope with difficult, hard ground and very large surfaces. Unfortunately, the combustion engine is relatively noisy, and a side effect of this type of drive is the release of toxic exhaust gases. A more ecological and quiet, but usually weaker alternative to combustion tillers are electric tillers - equipped with an electric drive. They can be powered by a battery or connected to a power source via a cable, which results in limited range or operating time.
- In your home garden, on a small plot or in a small field, an electric tiller should be enough.
- Are you working in sticky, heavy soil and/or on a large area? Consider investing in a powerful petrol tiller with a sufficiently large working width.
