A network switch, also known as a switch, is an essential device for building effective and efficient computer networks. Thanks to its intelligence and advanced functions, the switch enables smooth data transfer between devices within the network, minimizing collisions and ensuring transmission efficiency.

What is a network switch?

Moxa EDS-208-M-SC network switch A network switch is a device that plays a key role in connecting segments of a computer network at the second layer of the ISO/OSI model, called data links. Its main task is to transmit data packets between various network elements, using the appropriate port to which the packet recipient is connected.

This allows the switch to act as an intelligent hub, sending data only to the target device. The switch is characterized by a rectangular housing with many ports to which various network devices are connected, such as printers, servers, computers or network-controlled machines.

Switches available on the market offer a different number of ports. Depending on your network needs, you can choose models with several to several dozen ports. Another important parameter is throughput, which determines the maximum amount of data that the switch can process per unit of time. Bandwidth is crucial to network performance, especially under heavy loads.

Additionally, when selecting a network switch, you should pay attention to whether the switch supports network standards such as 10/100/1000 Mbps (Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet) or the newer 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps, 10Gbps (Multi-Gigabit Ethernet) to ensure adequate data transfer speed.

Managed switches allow you to configure and monitor device operation and use additional, specialized network functions of the third layer of the ISO/OSI model. PoE switches, on the other hand, allow power to be sent along with data over the same Ethernet cable, which is useful for network devices that require PoE or do not have access to a traditional power source.

What is the difference between a router and a network switch?

Weidmüller IE-SW-BL05T-5TX network switch A router and a switch are two different devices that perform different functions in the network. The main task of a router is to connect various networks, e.g. connecting a local home network to the Internet. The router makes decisions about routing traffic between different networks and also ensures network security through IP address translation.

A switch operates at a lower level than a router and focuses on transferring data between devices within one local area network (LAN). It does not make decisions regarding traffic between networks, but only ensures that devices within the same network communicate effectively.

How does a network switch work?

The switch works by using the MAC (Media Access Control) addresses of devices connected to its ports. When data is sent from one device, the switch checks the recipient's MAC address and redirects the data only to that one device, allowing for efficient and collision-free data transfer across the network.
