Drought periods are becoming more and more severe every year - both for households and industry. This fact is confirmed, among others, by: the government program "My Water", under which it is possible to obtain funding for the purchase and installation of a rainwater storage system for a single-family house. In total, the government allocated PLN 100 million in funding for this purpose. How to collect rainwater and how to use it optimally? Let's check!
In this article you will read about:
Rainwater collection is currently one of the key ways to combat the ongoing drought in Poland. We will also present you with effective and cost-effective solutions that will help you efficiently catch and store rainwater.

Why is it worth investing in rainwater tanks?
Every year, global drinking water reserves are decreasing dramatically. Poland is also experiencing problems related to the drastically progressing drought and the drying up of retention reservoirs. Currently, the level of retention water in Poland is only 4-6%, which is the lowest result among all European Union countries . The average level of retention waters in other Community countries is around 45-55%.
We should not expect that this problem will improve quickly on a national scale. However, we can independently improve the hydrological situation by investing in rainwater tanks . A rainwater tank will not only enable efficient collection and storage of rainwater during drought, but may also be an excellent way to eliminate flooding and puddles occurring within the plot during heavy rains.
An investment in rainwater tanks can pay off very quickly - especially if you take advantage of government subsidies under the "My Water" program. A rainwater tank with all the necessary installations for automation and transport of collected water is not an overly expensive investment and at the same time allows for convenient use of rainwater.
Rainwater tank and its practical aspects
Moreover, by collecting rainwater and not having a separate water meter counting the water used for watering the garden, it is possible to reduce sewage disposal fees. A water tank will also allow you to avoid rain tax (if the house is connected to a combined storm sewer system). It is also worth mentioning the ecological nature of the investment. A rainwater tank will increase the amount of water available, relieving the pressure on modest storage water supplies.

What can rainwater be used for?
According to current research carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Warsaw, the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the Białystok University of Technology, storing rainwater for up to 30 days allows it to be later used in everyday life.
Rainwater can be successfully used for almost half of the activities in which we normally use tap water. Rainwater can be used for:
- watering the garden,
- washing cars, driveways and sidewalks,
- flushing toilets,
- washing plates,
- powering swimming pools and ponds.
Rainwater is characterized by an extremely low hardness coefficient, neutral PH and no chlorine, lime, iron or other harmful conditioning substances.
Plots located on land classified as clay and loam soils, which are characterized by low permeability of rainwater, have a different problem. On such plots, the problem is the inability to effectively drain rainwater through the soil during heavy rains. Then, the rainwater tank will effectively collect excess water and prevent the formation of unsightly mud, ponds or local flooding.
