Selection of aeration and air release valves for water supply networks

Added: Saturday, 9/28/2024

Aeration and venting of the sewage system are essential for the proper functioning of the system. With properly selected valves, this process can be carried out quickly and effectively. Why is it necessary to aerate and vent the sewage system at all? Which aeration and venting valves should you choose?

Why is the sewer system aerated?

Aeration of the sewage system is a process during which air is introduced into the sewage riser. For this purpose, either ventilation risers or special valves are used, which allow aeration and, if necessary, venting of the system.

One of the most important is pressure equalization. The water and sewage system works in such a way that during the flow of water, negative or positive pressure can be created, which can lead to damage to the system elements. The lack of aeration causes water to be sucked out of the siphons, which in consequence is associated with the release of unpleasant sewage odors. This is the so-called siphoning phenomenon. The equalized pressure level prevents the problem.

The water and sewage system is also responsible for the removal of sewage. The lack of adequate pressure would lead to a situation in which sewage would flow much slower. It would clog and, as a result, blockage. The ventilation channels in the system help to unclog the installation, improving the flow of liquids and sewage.

The air inside the system helps protect the system from damage caused by stress on system components. Another major advantage is the ability to reduce noise that occurs when liquid flows through improperly aerated pipes.

Why is it necessary to vent the sewer system?

In water and sewage systems, not only aeration is very important, but also deaeration. There must be a balance here, because both too little air and too much air can lead to complications. Deaeration of the sewage system helps prevent the creation of negative pressure, which will cause the water in the siphon to be sucked in, allowing the free flow of sewage gas and the release of unpleasant odors from the installation into the rooms.

Thanks to proper venting, there is no problem with the proper flow of sewage through the sewage system. Excess air could lead to blockages and, consequently, to serious failures.

Pressure differences or blockages caused by too little air in the system can lead to damage. Controlling aeration reduces the risk, thereby extending the life of the entire system.

Types of air intake and exhaust valves

Depending on the needs of the installation, different models are used in the systems, differing in specification and application. Selecting the right one will effectively prevent irregularities and failures. Depending on the specifics, the following models are used:

  • Uponor HypAIR 70-110 aerator for internal sewage pipes one-way air admittance valves, their task is to supply air to the system in a situation where negative pressure is created inside the pipes, they are only responsible for supplying air, preventing it from being released outside the system, these valves are quite small, but extremely effective and easy to install;
  • two-way air supply and release valves differ from the previous ones in terms of design and operating principle, they allow air to be supplied to the installation and released outside, thanks to them it is possible to easily regulate the pressure level in sewage pipes, used in large systems where significant pressure fluctuations are observed, requiring constant control and regulation;
  • high-flow air admittance valves, used in sewage systems characterized by high sewage flow, e.g. in hospitals or commercial buildings, are larger and their role is to supply large amounts of air, which is necessary to maintain patency; due to their design and specific application, they also allow for the discharge of large amounts of air to ensure that the sewage pressure management system is efficient;
  • aeration valves for individual devices - small, installed directly next to a given device (e.g. sink, washbasin), help protect siphons from sucking in water, installed in systems where the drain is located at a large distance from the main riser;
  • vacuum valves, used for aeration; when negative pressure is created inside the installation, the valve opens, letting air into the system;
  • aeration valves for horizontal pipes - these are valves with a special design that allows installation in horizontal systems, they are installed in places where vertical models are insufficient.

The selection of appropriate valves, as well as their arrangement, should be adapted to the specific needs of a given installation. Internal HT sewage is used in many systems, where together with valves it creates an effective water and sewage system.

How to remove air from the sewage system using aeration and vent valves?

The air valve helps manage the amount of air in the pipeline. Equipped with an opening and closing system, they perform control functions, removing excess air or allowing it to be supplied. The pressure must remain in balance for the pipeline to function properly.

This small element allows for the removal of small amounts of air in installations, or large amounts in the case of large facilities. The air release valve will work effectively if it is properly selected. The offer includes solutions with different valve diameters, including, for example, a 50 air release valve or a 110 air release valve . The individual elements must be matched to each other, creating a tight system.
