Basic Standardisation Institutions in the Context of Electricity
Devices and components used in the electrical industry must meet specific requirements and standards. It is worth knowing that, in accordance with the law, there are institutions that deal with standardization. In the field of electrical engineering, these are:
- IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission);
- CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization);
- PN, i.e. standards established by the Polish Committee for Standardization;
- IEEE, i.e. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers;
- UL, or Underwriters Laboratories;
- ISO, International Organization for Standardization.
Standardization institutions operate in the EU, Poland, and the United States. Despite their different locations, they are recognized in different regions. The main goal of the standardization organizations is to maintain standards that allow for maintaining high standards of safety and compatibility, as well as the quality of electrical devices and installations.
Poland in the international standardization system of electrical installations
In Poland, the Polish Committee for Standardization is actively operating, and its task is to introduce mandatory safety standards. The task of this institution is also to synchronize national and international regulations so that the applicable standards are consistent.
The Polish electrical standardization system is based on several key aspects. The basis is adaptation to EU regulations, i.e. harmonization with IEC and EN. Having its own, national regulations does not exempt Poland from the obligation to apply standards in force in the European Union, which is why synchronization of the applicable regulations is so important.
As a member of the EU, Poland cooperates with CENELEC, thanks to which all the most important standards and regulations established in the Community are automatically implemented in Poland. The use of Polish standards is possible if they are consistent with the provisions also in force in the Union.
The applicable regulations include in particular provisions on the technical conditions and operation of electrical power equipment, standards specifying what equipment or accessories can be used in specific systems and installations. The use of standards ensures maximum safety of installations and cables. In practice, standardization systems are regulations that can be analyzed on a national, European and global basis.

Polish standards had to be unified with those in force on the Community market. This is a great convenience, and the implementation of the EN standard into Polish standards allows for easy integration within the internal market.
