How to deal with steel pipe failure in heating and water systems?

Added: Monday, 9/28/2020

Any installation made of steel pipes (whether galvanized or black) will eventually fail. There will be different reasons for this in the case of hot and cold water, different in heating systems, and still different in the case of compressed air. Both the materials used for installation and repair products should provide the pipes with a high level of resistance to corrosion, extreme temperature, pressure and mechanical damage. Another challenge that may be encountered over time is the need to expand the pipeline. In the first case, the fastest and best solution are GEBO Clamps repair clamps, and in the second case, GEBO Quick compression fittings.

How to deal with steel pipe failure in heating and water systems_

What causes steel pipe failure?

Every steel pipe installation will sooner or later fail. How quickly this happens depends on many factors. The quality of water varies in different places - the type of salts and gases dissolved in it affects its corrosiveness. The temperature of the medium, its flow speed and the pressure in the installation are also important. Failures of steel pipes are also influenced by the design of the system itself - what materials were used to make it, how the cables were attached and how many connections were used in the entire installation. Finally, the environment in which the pipeline is located will also be important, i.e. the ambient temperature or the possible presence of substances aggressive to steel.

European standards and national regulations regulate what water should be allowed into water supplies. One of the requirements is the lack of corrosive aggressiveness towards installation materials. Although the responsibility for compliance with such rules rests with water supply companies, it must be taken into account that in many towns in Poland, water may have a more destructive effect on installations, primarily causing pipe corrosion.

Regardless of where you live, everyone should prepare for the possibility of a steel pipeline failure. What to do if a cable in the heating or water system is damaged? Reach for GEBO products!

In case of steel pipe failure - GEBO Clamps repair clamps

When a pipe in a heating or water installation is damaged due to corrosion or other destructive factors, you have two solutions to choose from. The first is a long and expensive replacement of the entire section of the pipeline. The second one - definitely easier, faster and less expensive - are GEBO renovation and repair clamps. They come in 3 variants, each of which will work in a slightly different situation:

  • DS clamps - long and massive, made of ductile cast iron. Due to their properties, they are most often used to seal holes and cracks resulting from corrosion, frost or mechanical damage in water supply systems. They can also be used to temporarily seal pipes in compressed air installations.
  • DSK clamps - two-part renovation clamps, made of malleable cast iron and used for repairs of steel and polyethylene pipelines. They are intended for sealing cracks, leaks and corrosive places. They are equipped with EPDM rubber, which is approved for use in drinking water environments.
  • ANB clamps - similar to DSK clamps, because they are also made of malleable cast iron. However, they differ from them in the presence of a side outlet with internal thread, which allows for the creation of an additional outlet in water and heating installations.

If it is necessary to modify the pipeline - GEBO Quick compression fittings

If repairing the water or heating installation is not the only challenge you face, GEBO fittings will come in handy. They are used, among other things, for the modernization and expansion of pipelines, and thanks to the use of the clamping ring mechanism patented in 1936, this work is carried out in a simple, quick and cheap way.

Made of malleable cast iron, GEBO universal fittings are suitable for water installations and compressed air systems. Among the available products you will find variants:

  • with external thread (QA),
  • with internal thread (QI),
  • tee with outlet with internal thread (QT),
  • with clamping ring on both sides (QO).

An additional advantage is that old steel pipes can be successfully combined with modern polyethylene pipes. The process is very simple and the connections are durable and reliable.

How to install GEBO Clamps repair clamps?

GEBO renovation and repair clamps

GEBO clamps are placed on the damaged section of the pipe, and the entire process takes no more than a few minutes. Usually, you don't even need to cut off the medium supply. Therefore, this solution is widely used by installers throughout Europe. It allows you to seal cracks resulting from various types of damage, and thanks to the use of EPDM rubber, it is completely safe for health, even in the case of drinking water installations.

Before installing the clamp, select its type depending on the material and pipe diameter. You don't have to worry about the hassle of cutting out the damaged part - just seal it. An additional advantage is the fact that by using ANB clamps, you can easily install an additional branch of the installation.

During repair and modernization work, it may also be necessary to use GEBO compression fittings. Thanks to them, you will get solid and tight connections between pipes, saving both time and money. It is also an irreplaceable solution for all hard-to-reach places. This type of work takes place without the need for welding and threading. Connecting pipes is quick and easy.

  1. Cut the end of the pipe at a 90-degree angle to the axis of the pipe. Make sure the edge of the pipe is smooth and free of any debris.
  2. Slide all elements of the GEBO fitting onto the pipe in the following order: nut, clamping ring, pressure ring and sealing ring.
  3. Insert the end of the pipe into the sealing socket in the body. Don't forget to check the fit.
  4. Screw the compression nut onto the connector body. At this stage the pipe should not rotate!

Connectors and repair clamps in heating and water installations

GEBO products are the only way to effectively and quickly repair damage to steel pipes in water and heating systems. They allow you to avoid the need to cut out damaged parts of the pipeline, welding and threading. If you do not want to undertake an expensive and problematic renovation, use repair connectors and clamps.

The products are made of malleable cast iron, which translates into their durability in difficult environmental conditions. They meet all installation requirements, so they do not impair the quality of drinking water. In addition, they are available in several different variants, so in the GEBO assortment you can easily find a product that suits a specific type of pipeline and a given damage or specific installation situation.
