The use of infrared thermometers in industry

Added: Monday, 1/29/2024

An infrared thermometer used in industry (also known as a pyrometer) works on a similar principle to the one that many people currently have in their home medicine cabinets. It is used for quick and non-contact measurement of the temperature of the measuring object, which - in the case of an industrial device - is usually not a person, but e.g. an installation. What is an infrared thermometer for and what exactly is its use in industry? You will find answers to these and many other questions about non-contact temperature measurement in our guide. We invite you to read!

How does an infrared thermometer work?

Sonel DIT-200 infrared thermometer Pyrometer with Calibration Certificate An infrared thermometer is a measuring device that uses infrared (heat) radiation emitted by every object to measure temperature. It is a non-contact thermometer, which means that the exact temperature of the measured object is checked without physical contact. It may be located some distance from the thermometer. The device measures the amount of infrared radiation, i.e. energy emitted by the surface of an object, that reaches the sensor. It then converts the tested value into temperature and shows it on the display. The higher the surface temperature, the more energy is produced.

The use of infrared thermometers in industry

Anyone who operates machines, works on a construction site or services heating or cooling devices on a daily basis certainly has a pyrometer at their disposal. Modern infrared thermometers used in industry are able to register both very high and extremely low temperatures, ranging from -40°C to as much as 550°C. By measuring temperatures over such a wide range, they are suitable for many industrial applications. Models equipped with a backlit display can be used in the dark. The measurement range and functions of the thermometer depend on the selected model.

  • In the food industry, both the ambient temperature and the temperature of individual objects are very important. The industrial infrared thermometer allows you to check the temperature of food and the temperature in freezers, refrigerators, freezers and counters.
  • FLUKE 62 MAX infrared thermometer In the automotive and machinery industries, an infrared thermometer ensures temperature control of components and dangerous and hard-to-reach areas.
  • In refrigeration, infrared thermometers are used for quick and non-contact measurement of the internal and external temperature of compressors, coolers, heat exchangers, pipes and other devices and their parts. Additionally, they allow you to check tightness and detect possible failures.
  • In the construction industry, an infrared thermometer allows you to locate places exposed to water and detect drafts and thermal currents.
  • The fire brigade uses an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature behind walls when firefighters cannot get close to the heat source.
  • In gastronomy, an infrared thermometer, especially one equipped with a penetration probe, is an absolutely indispensable device. During cooking, it enables both non-contact measurement of temperatures using infrared, as well as contact determination of the core temperature of the dish using a probe. The temperature sensor is placed in liquids and semi-solids.
