Which concrete compactor should you choose?

Added: Tuesday, 7/25/2023

The compactor is one of the devices that cannot be missing, e.g. on a construction site, when laying paving stones, etc. Its basic task is to compact the ground to make it more stable. How does the compactor work, what problems may occur when using the device and which compactor should you choose?

How does a compactor work?

The mechanism of operation of the compactor itself is not complicated. The equipment is used to increase the density of the substrate, but its strength depends on specific factors. The operation of the compactor is influenced primarily by two parameters - the value of the centrifugal force and the frequency of operation, referred to as the compaction force.

When looking for an appropriate solution, you should be aware that the power given in kilonewtons depends on the value of the centrifugal force of the device. It occurs when the weight is transferred to the compactor plate. In turn, frequency means the rate at which the weights rotate in the device, this value is given in vibrations per minute. It should be taken into account that the increase in the whipping rate does not go hand in hand with the power, on the contrary - the lower the frequency index, the greater the power.

Before purchasing, you should carefully consider which concrete compactor will be suitable for the work. Parameters that must be taken into account in the decision-making process are: size and weight of the device, size of the working plate, number of eccentric rollers, vibration frequency, working speed and compaction density.

The most common compactor problems and their solutions

The compactor, like any device, requires proper maintenance and use to operate reliably. Despite following the rules provided by the manufacturers, equipment failure may occur. The most common problems occur with the engine and its accessories, as well as with the vibration system.

The most common faults include engine malfunctions, which may cause problems with starting the device, uneven engine operation or intense smoking. These situations may result from improper maintenance or the fact that the device is quite old. These types of problems require detailed evaluation and repair.

Fuel problems also occur quite often, e.g. flow problems, due to damage to the fuel line or throttle, or as a result of a clogged fuel filter. The carburetor can also cause many problems by supplying the wrong fuel-air mixture to the device.

The failure may also concern the vibration system itself, whose significant wear and carelessness in servicing (mainly ensuring the appropriate oil level in the system) may lead to seizure and damage of individual mechanisms, such as bearings, sleeves, as well as the V-belt or control cable.

Why doesn't the compactor want to move?

One of the most common failures is damage to the running gear. The good condition of the running gear depends on, among others: driving characteristics of the device. You should be aware that this system is quite complicated and consists of various components, such as a hydraulic pump, pipes, valves and a distributor. If any of the system components are damaged, hydraulic oil may leak, which will significantly deteriorate the driving properties.

Scheppach HP3000S compactor

Scheppach HP3000S reversible compactor One of the most interesting and very popular devices is the Scheppach HP3000S compactor . It is a reversible device, which means that after the appropriate gear setting, it can move in both directions. Perfect for compacting gravel, sand and soft soil. The big advantage is the durable, steel compaction plate with rounded edges. The device equipped with a self-cleaning plate is characterized by high maneuverability and ease of use. The parameters are also noteworthy - a plate with a size of 730 by 450 mm causes pressure on the substrate of the row, compacting the soil with a force of 30,500 N. To increase work efficiency, it is equipped with a high-performance engine and a high feed speed of 25 m/min. The device allows you to compact the soil to a depth of 50 cm. The equipment weighs 171 kg.
