An efficient flush is one of the most important devices in the home. Its failure is troublesome, but in many cases you can repair the flush yourself. The fault is usually caused by wear of the water filling valve or the drain valve. All you need to do is diagnose the fault and buy the broken elements. How does the filling valve for the flush work? What elements does it consist of? What to remember when buying a float valve to match a specific flush model? We explain and advise.

What is a fill valve?
The filling valve, together with the drain valve, forms the internal mechanism of the flush. It consists of elements such as a valve, a float and a screw adjusting the height of the float, which is why it is also called a float valve. The correct setting of the float regulates the operation of the valve. Most valves that supply water to the flush have a function of regulating the amount of water and the pressure of the drain, which allows you to save on water bills and at the same time thoroughly clean the toilet bowl. Currently, most valves used in hydraulics have the ability to limit the amount of water taken to 3 and 6 liters. The water pressure is regulated using orifice rings mounted in the flush basket. The larger the diameter of such a sleeve, the higher the water pressure. In turn, smaller rings allow you to save the amount of water and, consequently, the amount of bills.
Depending on the type of flush, there are several types of filling valves:
- filling valves for external flushes;
- filling valves for concealed sets;
- filling valves with 1/2 inch connecting thread;
- filling valves with 3/8 inch connection thread.
What is the function of the fill valve in a cistern?
The purpose of the connection valve
is the automatic filling of the water in the cistern, after pressing the flush button and water flowing into the toilet bowl. The filling and draining valves operate thanks to the force of gravity and water buoyancy. If the cistern does not collect water, the filling valve is damaged. When water is collected but leaks into the toilet bowl, or worse, flows out from under the cistern cover, the reason is that the float level is set too high. If, on the other hand, the water continues to flow into the toilet bowl after the water supply to the cistern is turned off, the drain valve in the cistern is damaged. If the cistern does not collect water or the water flows into the toilet bowl, it does not mean that all the water is
the flush valve needs to be replaced. Most often, it is enough to replace the fill or drain valve, and sometimes it is enough to clean them of sediment and accumulated impurities, and then reassemble.
When buying a new filling valve, it is worth choosing a model from the same manufacturer as the cistern, matched to its type and model. If this is not possible, then you need to match the type of valve to the type of cistern, the water supply mounting (side or top) and the diameter of the hole in the cistern for the connection thread, i.e. ½ inch or 3/8 inch. Some valves have both types of threads in the set, so that the valve fits into each hole.
