Added: Friday, 6/16/2023

An efficient flush is one of the most important devices in the home. Its failure is troublesome, but in many cases you can repair the cistern yourself. The fault is usually caused by a worn water fill valve or drain valve. All you need to do is diagnose the fault and buy the broken components. How does the cistern filling valve work? What elements does it consist of? What should you remember when buying a float valve to fit a specific cistern model? We explain and advise.

What is a filling valve?

Alcadrain thread diameter 1/2" and 3/8" universal The filling valve, together with the drain valve, forms the internal mechanism of the cistern. It consists of elements such as a valve, a float and a screw adjusting the float height, which is why it is also called a float valve. Proper setting of the float regulates the operation of the valve. Most valves supplying water to the cistern have the function of regulating the amount of water and the drain pressure, which allows you to save on water bills and at the same time clean the toilet bowl thoroughly. Currently, most valves used in hydraulics have the ability to limit the amount of water drawn to 3 and 6 liters. The water pressure is regulated using orifice rings mounted in the cistern basket. The larger the diameter of such a sleeve, the greater the water pressure. In turn, smaller rings save the amount of water and, consequently, the amount of bills.

Depending on the type of cistern, there are several types of filling valves:

  • filling valves for external cisterns;
  • filling valves for concealed sets;
  • filling valves with 1/2 inch connection thread;
  • filling valves with 3/8 inch connection thread.

What is the function of the filling valve in the cistern?

The purpose of the connection valve Alcadrain (ceramic tanks) thread diameter 1/2" and 3/8" water is automatically filled in the cistern after pressing the trigger button and water flows into the bowl. Filling and draining valves operate thanks to the force of gravity and water buoyancy. If the cistern does not draw water, the filling valve is damaged. When water is drawn in but leaks into the bowl, or worse yet, flows out from under the cistern cover, the reason is that the float level is set too high. If, after turning off the water supply to the cistern, water still flows into the bowl, the drain valve in the cistern is damaged. If the cistern does not take in water or the water flows into the bowl, it does not mean that it is all empty Geberit Type 380 for concealed cisterns the cistern needs to be replaced. Most often, it is enough to replace the filling or drain valve, and sometimes it is enough to clean them of sediment and accumulated impurities and then reassemble them.

When purchasing a new filling valve, it is worth choosing a model from the same manufacturer as the cistern, matched to its type and model. If this is not possible, you need to match the type of valve to the type of cistern, water inlet mounting (side or top) and the diameter of the hole in the cistern for the connection thread, i.e. ½ inch or 3/8 inch. Some valves come with both types of threads, so that the valve fits any hole.
